    2. Overview This training will provide information about: Foundations and Agencies that provide funding for AT. How to access AT funding. Whatever else our time permits.

Public Agencies that may fund AT Medicaid: DME Medicare: home-based Private Insurance: policies vary widely Special Education: educational benefit Children’s Special Health Care: medical necessity Division of Services People with Disabilities Division of Aging & Adult Services: Alternatives Vocational Rehabilitation: employment related Veteran’s Administration

    4. Application Steps Needs determine the best agency to apply with. Determine the best funding agencies by: your need age financial status disability

    5. Use the right words! Use the right phrases that justify medical necessity and/or the essential need. Terminology makes the difference. Examples: Medicaid requires proof of medical necessity. Voc Rehab must be convinced the device would make the person employable. Special education funds devices that result in educational benefit.

    6. Denials What should you do if your request is denied?

    7. Appeal! Don’t give up! Always appeal Ask for a written statement of denial. Determine if the request is denied because of: lack of funds lack of information Ask for help from evaluation team. Keep copies of all paperwork. Consider applying somewhere else. Call the Disability Law Center at 800-662-9080.

    10. Other Funding Possibilities Local service clubs Kiwanis, Lions, Knights of Columbus. Disability organizations: United Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, etc. Worker’s Compensation will pay for devices for persons with work related injuries.
