1. UTILIZING THE INTERNET FOR PUBLICATIONS AIM OF THE WORKSHOP To draw attention of participants to some of the information resources on the net that can facilitate research.

2. OBJECTIVES • To present e-resources that the Library has identified as huge and important information resources that can enhance research and publication; • To get participants to use e-resources in their own disciplines or fields; and • To answer questions from participants on the presentation.

3. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS • Universities perform two basic functions: teaching and research; • Research is undertaken to further knowledge on a subject; • New research builds upon past research; • Academics conduct a review of previous research before carrying out their own work;

4. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS • "Standing on the shoulders of giants" is a famous phrase used to describe academic research; • It means we should look to learn from the major thinkers who went before us before developing our own ideas; • University research relies heavily on academic publications and libraries, but since the Web began in the 1990s the Internet has become a valuable research tool alongside these traditional sources.
