  2. Tribes on the Plains • 1. The historic period of Kansas began a few hundred years ago. During this time people lived in large family units called _____________________. • A: Tribes • 2. What are 3 ways that these tribes were different? • A: Clothing, language, customs, culture, housing. • 3. Ways they were the similar? • A: Had boundaries, lived in the Great Plains, hunted.

  3. Horses and Buffalo • 4. Where did Plains people get horses? What advantages did horses give them? • A: Europeans brought horses to North America in the 1500’s. By the 1800’s Plains tribes were expert riders. Horses allowed them to be mobile and live in harsher environments.

  4. Wichita and Pawnee • 5. Types of Housing • A: Tipis, grass and clay huts, Earth dug outs.

  5. Crops Clothing, Traditions • 6. How were vegetables preserved? Why did early people trade? • A: Cutting into thin strips and dried out for later use. Some tribes lacked goods that other tribes had plenty of.

  6. Kansa and Osage Homes. • Permanent longhouses covered in bark.

  7. Crops, clothing, traditions. • 8. Foods that both peoples ate? • A: Corn, Beans, Squash, Buffalo. Corn, beans, squash were known as the 3 sisters.

  8. Nomadic Tribes • 8. Why were these tribes nomadic? What increased their mobility? • A: They lived in areas with few resources. Horses allowed them to live this way. • 9. Why did nomadic tribes live in tipis? • A: Because they were easy to travel with.

  9. Moving for food • Why didn’t nomadic tribes have gardens? • A: because they were always moving they weren’t in one place long enough. Buffalo were important for not only food but trade.
