  3. Wide variety of habitas • Mostly ground level or subterranean • Moles live underground • Eat mainly insects and some invertebrates • Require a lot of energy to survive

Behavior and Reproduction • Nocturnal • Poor eyesight • Communicate with squeaks, hisses, whistles, buzzes • Defense is to stay hidden • Hedgehogs use spines • Some shrews have venom • Almost all species are active year round • Remain alone all year until breeding • Males leave before offspring are born • Most have a gestation period of around 20 days
