  2. Will's Story Will stands up to John leaving a huge divide and tensionbetween the Guthrie family; ‘He didn’t once look in father’s direction nor father at him’ When Will leaves Chris but doesn’t return, Chris loses all trust in her brother; ‘But Chris, knowing none of his plannings, guessed right well something new it was kept Will quiet’

  3. Will's Story After leaving to Argentina, Chris grows lonely and is left on the farm with only her father there for company;‘Then a queer kind of pain came into her throat, her eyes smarted and she told herself she was daft, Will was only off for the day, he’d be back at night. But Will didn’t come back that night’ By him leaving to Argentina and letting go of the traditional farm life, it shows the contrast between the younger and older generation;‘Young Guthrie’s no fool to spread his bit wings’

  4. Will's Personality Will is an independent character who thinks for himself and does what he thinks is right; ‘Will had got him a job in the Argentine, cattle man there on a big Polled Angus ranch’ He is strong-minded and stands up for himself; ‘Father made to strike out Will, but Will caught his arm’ He is caring for his community; ‘God, I hope they’ve wakened!’

  5. Will's Relationships Will has a very strained and tense relationship with his Father John; But Will wasn’t ashamed, he looked after father with a sneer, the old fool thinks he can frighten me still’ ‘So will hated father, he was sixteen years of age and near a man, but father could still make him cry like a bairn’ He has very close relationship with Chris and cares about her;‘Will seemed angry and gentle and kind all at once. Don’t let them worry you, Chris, don’t let father make a damned slave of you’

  6. Will's Links To Key Themes Strong family bonds- his relationship with Chris shows this theme the most, as it is clear they have an important relationship with each other. Loneliness and isolation- when Will leaves Chris this theme is emphasised as we see how empty Chris’ life is without him. Growing up and independence- Will’s choice to leave the farm shows he is mature in his decision making and believes he can make a life for himself showing the theme of growing up and becoming independent.
