  2. Australian Approach This is where the future is actually planned This is what the Bulk Sampling was about Closure Planning is embedded in the entire Life of Mine Source: DITR, 2006 (18) © TouchStone Resources & Coal of Africa, 2011

  3. Bulk Sampling Box Cut Carbonaceous Seam Sandstone Overburden The Design Philosophy is based on Zero Discharge supported by a LEGACY Program The intention is that this will contribute to a new South African standard for mining in water-constrained areas that are culturally and ecologically sensitive

  4. The three combined pits will be ± 21 km long, ± 1.5 km wide and ± 200 metres deep • Carbonaceous waste will be separated at source • Non-carbonaceous waste will become an engineered aquifer • Manifolds will be built in • This converts a liability into an asset post-closure • Fundamentally changing the business case for mining

  5. The CoAL LEGACY Program L– Leveraging to sustain Livelihoods E– Economic Development needs Alignment G– Gains must always exceed losses at all levels A– Accountability viaSustainability Reporting C– Communication that is Honest and Transparent Y– Yearning to become Best of Breed © TouchStone Resources & Coal of Africa, 2011

  6. Closure with Pride P – People-centred approach Everything we do is about people and for people both inside and outside the company. We are temporary occupants of a site R – Respect for all I&AP’s Because people matter we respect them all, including those directly affected and shareholders. Respect permanent residents around the site I – Investment leveraging for livelihood flows The money we invest on-site also has implications off-site, so wherever we can we leverage what is best for ourLEGACY such as sustained livelihood flows post-closure D – Development alignment Wherever we can we will align our own investment with the developmental aspirations of the broader community to build our LEGACY E – Environment both on and off-site Because we believe in people we also respect the environment as a life-support system for all biological life. This is part of our LEGACY arising from our Core Values © TouchStone Resources & Coal of Africa, 2011

  7. Setting the Standards for 21st Century Mining Engineering in Water Constrained Areas Thank You We welcome the opportunity to refine these ideas and return South Africa to a leading position in mining engineering within a framework of social and environmental responsibility © TouchStone Resources, 2011
