  2. Five WHYS • Purpose: Identify root causes • Problem: Students scoring below basic in math • Add one step • Compare math for one grade

  3. Math score comparisons • Compare your school’s math proficency to the district and to the state. • Example: GRADE 8 Mathematics My School 57

  4. Five WHYS • Time frame • 3 minutes for individual response • Compare percent proficient at one grade level • Complete 5 whys • 8-10 minutes for group discussion • 20 minutes for reporting out

  5. Five WHYS Reporting • Hypothesis – an interpretation of a situation taken as the ground for action • Write one group hypothesis • Reporter- person with the next birthday

Group thoughts – MathematicsElementary Schools • Provide teachers with math content knowledge • Train teachers in strategies needed for a particular grade level • Train teachers in math content and delivery to develop their confidence level in mathematics • Spiral the math curriculum to constantly revisit previous math content • Integrate math content with differentiated instruction across all subject areas • Develop systematic activities similar to all grade levels (ADD, Calendar Math) • All schools play the same game at the same time on the same field • Track students over several years to determine weaknesses

Group thoughts – MathematicsMiddle and High Schools • Teach in small groups with differentiated instruction • Utilize backward design and differentiated instruction based upon deep analysis • Recruit highly qualified & certified teachers from other career fields (engineering, medical) • Retain highly qualified & certified teachers • Sequence math and science classes • Eliminate Algebra I, Part 2 in favor of complete year of Algebra I • Double-dose students who score below Basic for math instead of P.E. for 2-3 days per week • Track students over several years

Group thoughts – ScienceQuick Wins for August • Conduct weekly science experiments from Day 1 • Offer science exploratoriums, expos, science fairs, student workshops • No textbook Fridays-experiment of the week • Adopt a class pet or create an outdoor garden • More focus on non-fiction reading, literacy, vocabulary • Inventory science materials/equipment on school site • Write grants to acquire science kits and additional materials • Provide science content for professional development and resources (LRCE, Millken Foundation) • Apply science knowledge using authentic assessments • Use graphic organizers • Integrate science with other content areas • Make curriculum the focus rather than the textbook
