Five WHYS • Purpose: Identify root causes • Problem: Students scoring below basic in math • Add one step • Compare math for one grade
Math score comparisons • Compare your school’s math proficency to the district and to the state. • Example: GRADE 8 Mathematics My School 57
Five WHYS • Time frame • 3 minutes for individual response • Compare percent proficient at one grade level • Complete 5 whys • 8-10 minutes for group discussion • 20 minutes for reporting out
Five WHYS Reporting • Hypothesis – an interpretation of a situation taken as the ground for action • Write one group hypothesis • Reporter- person with the next birthday
Group thoughts – MathematicsElementary Schools • Provide teachers with math content knowledge • Train teachers in strategies needed for a particular grade level • Train teachers in math content and delivery to develop their confidence level in mathematics • Spiral the math curriculum to constantly revisit previous math content • Integrate math content with differentiated instruction across all subject areas • Develop systematic activities similar to all grade levels (ADD, Calendar Math) • All schools play the same game at the same time on the same field • Track students over several years to determine weaknesses
