  8. Yankees During the Civil War, and even after the war came to an end, Yankee was a term used by Southerners to describe their rivals from the Union, or northern, side of the conflict. After the war, Yankee was once again mostly used to describe New Englanders.

  9. Rebels Confederate soldier in the Civil War: term used chiefly by Northerners One who engages in armed resistance against the established government of one's country

  10. Blue and Gray The two sides are often referred to by the color of their official uniforms, blue for the Union, gray for the Confederates. Uniforms at the beginning of the Civil War, however, showed greater variety than would be true later in the conflict. Many men wore whatever they brought from home. Local militia units that had their own uniforms wore them as they came to join the Union or Confederate armies.

  11. Johnny Reb • Johnny Reb or Johnny Rebel is the national personification of the Southern states of the United States, or less generally, the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The latter part of his name is derived from rebellion. Patriots used Johnny Reb to symbolize the common Southern soldiers in the American Civil War of the 1860s. • Johnny Reb is usually pictured in gray wool uniform with the typical kepi-style forage cap made of wool broadcloth with a rounded, flat top, cotton lining, and leather visor. He is often shown with his weapons and with the Confederate flag.

  12. Billy Yank • Billy Yank or Billy Yankee is the personification of the Northern States of the United States, or less generally, the Union during the American Civil War. The latter part of his name is derived from yankee, a slang term for New Englanders. Political cartoonists used Billy Yank to symbolize the Northern combatants in the American Civil War of the 1860s. • Billy Yank is usually pictured wearing a regulation Yankee wool uniform that included the fatigue blouse, a light-weight wool coat with an inside pocket and four brass buttons on the front, with a kepi-style forage cap made of wool broadcloth with a rounded, flat top, cotton lining, and leather visor.
