  2. Group Quarters Definition A group quarters is a living quarters where people live or stay together, other than the usual housing unit. The occupants of group quarters usually share their living arrangements. College and university dormitories, group homes, convents, and certain hospital wards are examples of group quarters.

  3. Group Quarters / Outdoor Location Procedures • same procedures as used in over 113 special censuses in 10 states this decade • based on 2000 Decennial Census procedures

  4. Developing the Group Quarters List • start with the list of group quarters from the 2000 Decennial Census • update with list provided by MAG on March 4, 2005 • local office updates list from other local sources such as telephone books • update with list provided by MAG on July 8, 2005

  5. Comparing Group Quarters Lists • MAG list will be compared to 2000 Census list • group quarters not on the 2000 Census list will be added • group quarters on the 2000 Census list but not on MAG list will be included in enumeration process

  6. Information Needed on Group Quarters List • name of group quarters • physical location (address) • nearest intersecting street • type of group quarters (dormitory, nursing home) • telephone number • contact person name • any special notes (one of multiple locations owned by one company)

  7. Group Quarters Enumeration • QGs on consolidated list will be contacted by telephone or personal visit • approximately 32 enumerators and 4 crew leaders • multi-lingual as appropriate • September 13 through September 30 • non-GQs will be forwarded to HU staff

  8. Group Quarters Questionnaire • enumerator filled form, not respondent filled • name and address of group quarters • type of group quarters • contact person name and telephone number • total count of residents • no demographic data • no list of residents

  9. Developing the Outdoor Location List • March 4, 2005 MAG provides list of approximately 300 outdoor locations • July 8, 2005 MAG provides an update to outdoor locations • July 8, 2005 MAG provides list of Gate Keepers to assist with access to select outdoor location sites • not a count of homeless persons

  10. Outdoor Location Enumeration • personal visit • two person teams (plus Gate Keepers in select sites) • total count of people • no demographic data

  11. Outdoor Location Questionnaire • enumerator filled form, not respondent filled • one form per location • physical location of site • total persons at site

  12. Group Quarters / Outdoor Location Counts • provided at the county, jurisdiction, jurisdiction sub-area, and balance of county levels • total resident population not living in housing units • includes both group quarters and outdoor locations

  13. What You Can Do to Help • Coordinate with MAG to provide the most comprehensive list of group quarters you can compile. • Promote the group quarters and outdoor location enumeration among service provider organizations and resident populations.
