  2. Session Objectives • Know what the unit is about, • Understand what you need to learn, • Understand what you need to do, • Details of how the unit will be structured.

  3. About The Unit • This unit will teach you to: • Explore how record-structured databases are used in organisations, • Explore how information is structured for database storage and processing, • Understand and use logical data modelling, • Apply the principles of relational database design, • Design, implement and test a relational database to meet a given specification, • Produce user documentation, • Develop good practice in their use of ICT.

  4. Topics Covered • Database Concepts, • Logical Data Modelling, • Normalisation, • Relational Database Structures, • Relational Database Construction, • Testing Relational Databases, • Documenting Relational Databases.

  5. Pukka Pizza Assessment • This unit is assessed by means of a portfolio, • It will involve you designing, implementing, testing and documenting a database system for:

  6. The Assignment Requires… • Analysis notes of the current scenario, • Design notes for a proposed database system which meets the needs of the user, • Evidence that the data model has been normalised to 3rd normal form (NF), • A working relational database which has a user interface, including data input forms and methods of obtaining output, • User and technical documentation; • Test plans and the results of the testing of the database; • An evaluation of the effectiveness of the solution and performance whilst completing the work.

  7. The Schedule • Firstly you will look at database theory and practise designing them on paper, • Once confident you will the commence the assignment and complete the design section of the portfolio. • You will then be taught how to use Microsoft Access and work on bringing your database design to life, • Finally you will compile your portfolio as required in the mark sheet.

  8. Support • Notes will be provided to all aspects of the topic, • Support materials for writing the project will be given, • Regular exercises will be set and answers given when complete, • Scans of text books are available – read them!!

  9. Topic Task • Print and read through the unit specification. Make yourself familiar with what you need to learn and how the criteria for each task is graded
