Attention and listening – putting it all into practice. • Remove distractions • Get down on your child’s level • Look at your child when you are talking to them • Say their name to get their attention • Praise your child when they attend and listen to you!!! Things to try with your child • Lego • Books • Nursery rhymes and songs • Lotto games • Colouring pictures – activity village • Practical play around the house • Hidden objects • Fuzzy felt • Pairs games

  3. Using toys for language development • Where would you play? • How many things out at once? • How would you play with them? E.g. – things that are same/ different; categories. • What are the rules of the game? • What words are you going to use during activities? • How are you going to expand your child’s language?

  4. Ideas for play for you and your child • Orchard games • Fuzzy felt • Play-dough • Tea-set • Cars, garage • Lego • Snap/ Happy families • Guess who? • Dressing up • Making puppets • Naming games • Messy play – painting, glue • Board games • I-spy

  5. I CAN – Talking tips! • Listen more than you talk – give your child time to think about what you have said. • Involve children in conversation – give opportunities to use language. • Emphasise turn-taking - help children understand communication is a two way system • Value what your child says – don’t ignore them!!
