This review explores the concepts of enduring understandings (EUs) and essential questions (EQs) in education. EUs serve as guiding principles framed in accessible language, encouraging deeper student understanding of standards while fostering critical inquiry. EQs, designed to provoke thought and sustained interest, connect with enduring understandings and encourage exploration of complex issues. By framing inquiries that lack single answers, such as "How does art reflect cultural identity?", students are invited to engage with content meaningfully. Let's collaborate to refine our EUs and EQs.

Understanding by Design EU/EQ Quick Review January 19, 2010
EU Design Standards • Framed as a specific generalization • The big picture/big idea • Statement at the heart of the discipline • Framed in student friendly language • Helps to unpack the standards to increase student understanding • A “forever”
EU Design Standards Avoid… • Simple facts • Definitions
EU Examples English • Examining injustice and tolerance through literature encourages readers to examine these issues in their own lives. Social Studies • The universality of human response to problems transcends time, place and or technology.
What makes a question Essential?
EQ Design Standards • Have no one obvious “right” answer • Are related to an Enduring Understanding • Framed in student friendly language • Are designed to provoke and sustain student interest • Raise other important questions • Should be revisited throughout the year and across grade levels
EQ Design Standards Avoid… Questions that are too general and represent only a loose connection to a standard
EQ Examples English • How does art (song, text, visual art, etc.) evoke a culture's ethos or character? (as in: What is particularly "American" about a given artist? or How does an artist represent his or her era?) Social Studies • Whose America is it?
Questions? Let’s share our EUs and EQs
