  1. Preparations for Linac Commissioning Ray Fliller, Associate Physicist 8th ASAC meeting for NSLS-II Project May 10-11, 2011

  2. Introduction • Linac Commissioning is scheduled to start November 7, 2011. It is anticipated to last until the end of the year. • Obtaining authorization is required prior to commissioning. The authorization process involves the NSLS-II project, the lab ESH committee, lab management and the DOE. • The focus of this talk is path to authorization.

  3. Linac Commissioning Task Force • On December 15, Ferdinand appointed the Linac Commissioning Task Force who’s task is to coordinate commissioning of the NSLS-II linac • Members: • Ray Fliller – Injection Systems, Task Force Lead • Brett Parker – Injection Systems • Joe Delong – Controls • Feng Gao – RF • Om Singh – Diagnostics • Bob Casey – ESH • Andrew Ackerman – ESH • Mike Buckley – ESH • Randy Church – Operations • Mike Santana – Operations • Timur Shaftan – Injection Systems Group Leader • Jim Rose – RF Systems Group Leader • Ferdinand Willeke – Accelerator Systems Division Head • Meetings are held bi-weekly and as needed. • Current focus has been the Authorization Basisdocumentation required for linac commissioning in culminating in the Accelerator Readiness Review.

  4. Zoom in to linac vault LB-B2 This section will not see beam during commissioning End of Linac LB-B1 ICT Equipment installation proceeds through the penetration and ends at a gate valve.

  5. Operation Authorization Process May 28, 2011 ~2009 April 12, 2011 We are here, Send to DDO this week May 31, 2011 October 17, 2011 November 7, 2011 Courtesy of Steve Hoey.

  6. Linac Commissioning Schedule • Lab ESH committee reviews the Authorization Basis (AB) Documentation – April 12, 2011 – finished. • Deputy Director of Operation approval of AB documentation – package to DDO this week • BHSO receive AB Documentation for Review – May 28, 2011 • ARR Team Appointment – May 31, 2011 • BHSO Approval of AB documentation – July 8, 2011 • Injector Building Beneficial Occupancy Date - July 28, 2011 • Linac Installation Begins - August 11, 2011 • Linac ARR - October 17, 2011 • Linac Commissioning Begins – November 7, 2011

  7. Immediate Next Steps • Develop the Linac Commissioning Plan and other necessary documentation • Linac Commissioning Plan outlines what needs to occur to be ready for commissioning. • Get necessary AB documentation approvals from DDO and BHSO. • Interface with Research Instruments to develop a linac commissioning sequence • A draft sequence exists. • I will travel to RI in lateJune with this as one of my tasks. • Finish High Level application requirements and specifications • Prepare to the ARR

  10. Linac Parameters and Measurements necessary for commissioning

  11. List of High Level Applications(not exhaustive) Want to have specifications for all high level applications by the end of May

  12. Conclusion • Linac Commissioning Task Force has been assembled to coordinate commissioning tasks. • Task force’s main focus to date has been on developing the AB documents with ESH. • This is on schedule • The path to commissioning is clear both from ESH and physics point of view.
