  1. Skillstreaming Skill 17: Joining In

  2. Skill 17: Joining In Joining In is a skill that is useful for students having difficulty deciding what to do in social play situations. This skill allows the student to have an opportunity and be able to join peers in ongoing activity. Encourage students to try this skill out on adults and peers who they feel accept them first.

  3. Skill 17: Joining In Ask Yourself : Who What Where When Why How… Of Joining In!

  4. Skill 17: Joining In OUR STEPS Step 1: Decide if you want to join in. Step 2: Decide what to say. Step 3: Choose a good time. Step 4: Say it in a friendly way.

  5. Skill 17: Joining In Step 1: Decide if you want to join in. Before you ask someone if you can join in, decide whether or not you really want to participate. Make sure the activity the other(s) person is doing is something that you like or would want to learn how to do. It is not polite to ask to join in and then try to get people to change what they were doing.

  6. Skill 17: Joining In Step 2: Decide what to say. It is always a good idea to think about what and how you ask someone to join in. One way you can ask is, “Can one more person play?” or Can I play, too?” How else might you ask someone if you can join in?

  7. Skill 17: Joining In Step 3: Choose a good time. How can you tell it is a good time to ask if you can join in? What are some examples? How about during a break in the activity or before the activity has begun?

  8. Skill 17: Joining In Step 4: Say it in a friendly way. When you say something in a friendly way, you have to remember what your body language is saying. What are some examples of nonverbal communication that show you are asking in a friendly way? Why is asking in a friendly way important?

  9. Skill 17: Joining In Let's Review Step 1: Decide if you want to join in. Step 2: Decide what to say. Step 3: Choose a good time. Step 4: Say it in a friendly way.

  10. Let's Preactice!! Here are some suggested activities. Practice these with your friends so you can become experts on Joining In. School: Ask to join in a group game at recess. Home: Ask to join in a game with parents, brothers, or sisters. Peer Group: Ask to join in a activity in the neighborhood.

  11. Skill 17: Joining In Instead of standing around waiting to be asked to join in, take charge of you, you be the one to ask if you can join an activity! You may even get a new friend by doing so.
