  2. Skill 9: Asking a Question What does it mean to ask a question? Who do you ask a question to at school? Where do you ask questions at school? When do you ask questions? Why do you ask questions at school? How should you ask questions to an adult or to another student?

  3. Skill 9: Asking a Question OUR STEPS Step 1: Decide what you need to ask. Step 2: Decide whom you will ask. Step 3: Decide what to say. Step 4: Choose a good time. Step 5: Ask your question.

  4. Skill 9: Asking a Question Step 1: Decide what you need to ask. As a student, it is real important for you to decide whether or not you truly need to ask a question. If you decide that you need to ask a question, make sure the question relates to what is being discussed, taught, or relates to the task you are doing in the classroom at that moment.

  5. Skill 9: Asking a Question Step 2: Decide whom you will ask. After the decision has been made to ask a question, you then need to decide who to ask. Sometimes you may ask the teacher, a classroom aide, a classmate, or someone else. How do you know when you should only ask your teacher a question? When can you ask a classmate or someone else?

  6. Skill 9: Asking a Question Step 3: Decide what to say. Now you need to decide on what to say. Remember it is not always what you say but how you say it. Asking your question in a friendly way is crucial in order to show respect to the person you are asking, those around you, as well as to yourself. How should you ask a question in both a verbal and non-verbal way?

  7. Skill 9: Asking a Question Step 4: Choose a good time. When can you tell that it is a good time to ask your question? Usually a great time to ask a question is when the other person is not busy or not talking with someone else. In the classroom it is always a good idea to raise your hand and wait to be called on before you ask your question. Raising your hand informs your teacher that you have a question. He or she will then allow you to ask when it is a good time to do so.

  8. Skill 9: Asking a Question Step 5: Ask your question. You can now ask your question! Remember…do not forget to say Thank You (skill 3) once you receive the answer to your question. This will show you have great manners as well as let the other person know you appreciate their help.

  9. Skill 9: Asking a Question The Five Steps in Asking a Question are…. Step 1: Decide what you need to ask. Step 2: Decide whom you will ask. Step 3: Decide what to say. Step 4: Choose a good time. Step 5: Ask your question.
