13. Methamphetamine in the Body It is a synthetic stimulant that imitates Epinephrine (Adrenaline)
Increases heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and breathing rate
Stimulates the body to release a large dosage of Epinephrine
Stimulates the body to release a large dosage of Dopamine and small amount of Serotonin
It increases the blood flow to the large muscle groups in the body
14. Methamphetamine in the Body It decreases the blood flow to the digestive tract
Increases the bodies metabolism
Increases alertness
Gives a sense of increased energy
Dramatically increases libido, the sex drive
Creates the inability for a male to reach an orgasm with physical release
Gives the ability to have sex for hours or days
15. Methamphetamine in the Body Athetosis – writhing, jerking, or flailing movements
Suppresses the normal production of Dopamine and Serotonin, creating a chemical imbalance in the brain

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
21. Methamphetamine in the Body
Health effects and mental health effects may be immediate or delayed and may persist months or even years after the drug abuse has stopped
22. Signs of High Intensity Abuse Weight Loss: 50 to 100 pounds, Meth literally eats away body fat and muscle
Central Polar: center of the face will become pale due to the constriction of blood vessels at the skins surface
Body Odor: abusers lose personal hygiene and will have chemicals present in their perspiration. This will emit a putrid smell similar to glue or mayonnaise
23. Signs of High Intensity Abuse Sweating: will occur primarily around the upper lip and brow, this is caused by the increase in body temperature
Bad Teeth: this is caused by the chemicals used to make the drug and the loss of personal hygiene
Scars / Open Sores: caused by “Crank Bugs” which is an hallucination where bugs are on their skin and they try to scratch or pick them off
24. Meth Mouth Meth Mouth – a dental condition caused by the use of methamphetamine
This is characterized by rampant caries or tooth decay
Teeth become; blackened, stained, crumbling, rotting, or falling apart
Effects can be caused in as little as one year
25. Meth Mouth
Methamphetamine causes xerostomia, or dry mouth, due to the lack of saliva production
The absence of the natural protective effects of saliva directly leads to increased tooth decay, particularly at the gum line
The absence of the protective effect of saliva can make the mucosa of the mouth more vulnerable to infections
This leads to chronic halitosis and causes a dramatic rise in the number of cavities
26. Meth Mouth Methamphetamine also induces a craving for hi-calorie, carbonated, sugary beverages
The lack of personal hygiene during extended periods of abuse further promotes tooth decay
Bruxism, the grinding and clenching of the teeth, will cause teeth to crack, chip, and break off
Frequent snorting of methamphetamine reduces the blood supply to the arteries that supply the upper teeth and gums causing periodontitis, or gum disease
27. Understanding Meth Psychosis Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that effects the Central Nervous System.
Meth will effect many different chemicals within the brain and the body
Dopamine, the pleasure chemical in the brain, is effected the most
Meth stimulates the brain to release an explosive amount of Dopamine that is approximately 1,300 times greater than a normal release
Methamphetamine reverses the direction flow of Nor-Epinephrine and Dopamine transporters
28. Understanding Meth Psychosis The inversion causes the release of these transmitters from the vesicles to the cytoplasm and from the cytoplasm to the synapse
This creates an increased stimulation of post-synaptic receptors
Methamphetamine also indirectly prevents the reuptake of Dopamine and Nor-Epinephrine, causing them to remain in the synaptic cleft for prolonged periods
Meth literally rewires the brain and how the brain works
29. Is Treatment Available?
Yes
However, there are currently no proven pharmacological treatments
Treatment is available: Consists of cognitive behavioral interventions and recovery support groups
Current statistics show a 7% success rate for voluntary treatment admission
93% of the patients return to abuse the drug
30. 7 indicators of being under the influence of Meth Eyes
Teeth
Temperature
Movement
Skin
Speech
Paranoia
31. The Eyes The Central Nervous System is over stimulated.
Pupils of the eye will dilate and will not be able to adjust to changing light conditions.
Chronic meth users eyes may constrict but will be unable to adjust to changing light conditions.
Bright lights are painful and irritating to the user, causing irritation and agitation.
32. The Eyes Nystagmus – involuntary rapid movement (horizontal, vertical, rotary, or mixed, i.e. of two types) of the eyeball.
Users are unable to make constant eye contact and will continuously look away to avoid eye contact.
Users will often look through the corners of their eyes to avoid being starred down.
This is largely due to the extreme paranoia that the drug creates
33. The Teeth Bruxism – the grinding of the teeth.
Users will have a tenancy to gnash or grind their teeth, causing displacement of the tendons in the jaw.
Gnashing of the teeth may lead to chipping or breaking of the teeth.
The loss of personal hygiene, the chemicals used to manufacture, and the gnashing of the teeth will grind off the rough edges that are on normal teeth.
34. Body Temperature
Meth greatly increase the body’s temperature.
Users may appear to have a flushed look.
The increase in the body’s temperature will cause sweating primarily around the upper lip and brow.
35. Body Movement Athetosis - repetitive involuntary, slow, sinuous, writhing movements, especially severe in the hands.
The increased stimuli of the Central Nervous System creates excessive electrical impulses.
The user will be unable to set still.
The user may appear to be psychotic having involuntary body movements followed by out-of-control rages where the will talk to themselves or scream for no reason.
36. The Skin Meth literally eats away at body fat and muscular tissue.
Users show signs of a skeletal look where the skin appears to shrink to the bone.
The jaw, cheek bone, and temple become more pronounced.
A bad body odor is often present.
Sores or abscesses my be present from crank bugs
37. Speech The user’s thought pattern is accelerated and extremely scattered.
Users may not have a conscious thought pattern.
They will talk quickly and softly with a slight quiver in the voice.
Sentence structure is random and may contain numerous subjects within the same sentence, jumping from one to another.
38. Paranoia
A combination of sleep deprivation, chemical toxins from the manufacturing process, the absence of proper nutrition and the depletion of neurochemicals in the brain will all factor in on the extreme paranoia.
Users often see shadow people or ghost images caught fleeting from the corners of their peripheral vision.
Users feel that they are always under constant surveillance by the government and law enforcement.
39. Paranoia The user will become agitated easily and will be prone to violence.
The user will feel severe anxiety that will be followed with nervousness and extreme irritability.
They will often be suicidal and homicidal.
They become confused.
40. What is a Meth Lab? They are commonly referred to as a Clan Lab
Clan Lab is an acronym for Clandestine Laboratory
Clandestine Laboratory is defined by the DEA as an illicit operation consisting of a sufficient combination of apparatus and chemicals that either has been or could be used in the manufacture or synthesis of controlled substances
It is a crude chemistry lab that is operated illicitly

67. I AM METH I destroy homes, I tear families apart, take your children, and that’s just the start.
I’m more costly than diamonds, more precious than gold, the sorrow I bring is a sight to behold.
If you need me, remember I’m easily found, I live all around you, in schools and in town.
I live with the rich, I live with the poor, I live down the street, and maybe next door.
68. I AM METH I’m made in a lab, but not like you think, I can be made under a kitchen sink.
In your child’s closet, and even the woods, if this scares you to death, well it certainly should.
I have many names, but there’s one you know best, I’m sure you’ve heard of me, my name is crystal meth.
My power is awesome, try me you’ll see, but if you do, you may never break free.
69. I AM METH Just try me once and I might let you go, but try me twice, and I’ll own your soul.
When I possess you, you’ll steal and you’ll lie, you do what you have to, just to get high.
The crimes you’ll commit for my narcotic charms, will be worth the pleasure you’ll feel in your arms.
You’ll lie to your mother, you’ll steal from your dad, when you see their tears, you should feel sad.
70. I AM METH But you’ll forget your morals and how you were raised, I’ll be your conscience, I’ll teach you my ways.
I take kids from their parents, and parents from their kids, I turn people from GOD, and separate friends.
I’ll take everything from you, your looks and your pride, I’ll be with you always, right by your side.
You’ll give up everything, your family, your home, your friends, your money, then you’ll be alone.
71. I AM METH I’ll take and take, till you have nothing more to give, when I’m finished with you, you’ll be lucky to live.
If you try me be warned, this is no game, if given the chance, I’ll drive you insane.
I’ll ravish your body, I’ll control your mind, I’ll own you completely, your soul will be mine.
The nightmares I’ll give you while lying in bed, the voices you’ll hear, from inside your head.
72. I AM METH The sweats, the shakes, the visions you’ll see, I want you to know, these are all gifts from me.
But then it’s too late, and you’ll know in your heart, that you are mine, and we shall not part.
You’ll regret that you tried me, they always do, but you came to me, not I to you.
You knew this would happen, many times you were told, but you challenged my power, and chose to be bold.
73. I AM METH You could have said NO, and just walked away, if you could live that day over, know what would you say?
I’ll be your master, you’ll be my slave, I’ll even go with you, when you go to your grave.
Now that you have met me, what will you do? Will you try me or not? It’s all up to you.
I can bring you more misery than words can tell,
come take my hand, let me lead you to HELL.
74. I AM METH
The author is Native American girl who was in jail for drug charges and was addicted to crystal methamphetamine.
She had realized the horrors of the drug and wrote this poem while she was still in jail.
Not long after her release, she was found dead with the needle still in her arm.
75. What it Does to the Body

77. Methamphetamine LabFacts The average meth cook teaches ten others how to make meth annually
Every pound of meth produces and leaves behind five to six pounds of toxic waste
Possesses High Profit margins with low investment and start up costs
Availability of resources are plenty
Cooked with common household items
Penalties were generally low from 1978 - 1983
78. Common Ingredients for Methamphetamines

80. Methamphetamine LabFacts It is estimated that for every Met Lab seized, there are 10-15 missed
The production of Methamphetamine releases toxic clouds of poisonous gases that can be fatal
Contaminated Lab Sites pose a serious health hazard for re-occupancy
Meth lab site decontamination averages $9,500
Meth Lab Cooks will experience at least one fire every 36 months of cooking
25% of these fires will go un-reported
81. Methamphetamine Lab Components Chemicals
Vessels
Heating Devices
Tubing
Filters
Strainers
82. Chemicals There are currently over 350 known chemicals used in the production of methamphetamine
Only 182 chemicals have an odor
There are 50 to 60 common chemicals used for each type of production
There will be 6 to 8 different chemicals present at production
83. Chemical Categories
There are four primary categories that chemicals fall into:
Acids
Bases
Gases
Solvents
84. Five Types of Manufacturing Chemicals
Solvents
Precursors
Reagents
Catalysts
Cutting Agents
85. Vessels
Used to store chemicals and chemical solutions during and after the production process
Used to contain chemical reactions – reaction vessels
Can be used to retrieve a specific layer of chemical
They can range from scientific glassware to everyday household containers
86. Heating Devices Used to bring and maintain chemicals and chemical reactions to a specified temperature
Used for the distillation of solvents by speeding up the evaporation process
They will range from large heating mantels to kitchen hotplates, dependent on the size of the lab, available funds, and the production method utilized
Lab operators may use heating mantels, dual-burner electric hotplates, electric frying pans, butane heating devices, or kitchen stoves
The most common heating device found at small labs will be a single burner electric hotplate
87. Tubing
Typically will be attached to the top of the reaction vessel
Used to vent the odorous and poisonous gas
Used to circulate water for cooling methods
Lab operators use anything from garden hoses to clear, flexible plastic tubing, to vacuum or automotive engine hoses
Used tubing may have an amber, maroon, or dark chemical stain on the inside of the tubing
Tubing may have a laboratory grade or makes shift stopper attached to the end
88. Filters Used to lessen the toxic fumes that are emitted from the reaction vessel
Filtering devices can be constructed from numerous products. Respirator masks, buckets of ice water, clothing, and shoeboxes filled with fabric softener sheets have been utilized
Kitty Liter is the most commonly used filter
Kitty Liter is usually placed in a bucket with the vent tubing from the top of the reaction vessel running to the bottom of the bucket
89. Strainers
Used to separate the liquid from the sludge after initial reaction
Cloth, paper towels, laboratory grade funnel filters, bed sheets, and metal screens have been utilized as filtering devices
Coffee filters are the most common filter used in smaller production labs.
Filters may have an amber, maroon, or darker colored sludge stain on them
Filters may have a clump of white or pink substance in it
90. Signs of a Meth Lab Operation Where there is smoke there is fire. Approximately 25% to 30% of meth labs are discovered as a result of a fire or explosion.
More than normal consumption of coffee filters, hydrogen peroxide bottles, empty pill bottles, camera battery packages, solvents, carburetor cleaner, heat, small to large sized plastic baggies
Starter Fluid cans with holes in the side or bottom of the can
