UCLA provides ground-based magnetic observatory support for THEMIS missions led by Prof. C.T. Russell, including magnetometer delivery, installation, and maintenance in high schools. The system features high-resolution magnetometers and GPS receivers for accurate data collection and analysis.

Objectives • Support the THEMIS science and EPO missions by supplying science grade, ground based magnetometers. • Support the THEMIS EPO mission by building, installing and maintaining 10 ground based magnetic observatories in high schools across the US.
Hardware Delivered • GBO Magnetometers • UCLA supplies basic magnetometer, power supply, sensor and GPS receiver. UCB integrates. UCB and Calgary install. • GPS-Only Units. • UCLA supplies GPS data handling unit, power supply and GPS receiver. UCB integrates. UCB and Calgary install. • EPO Magnetometers • UCLA supplies basic magnetometer, power supply, sensor, GPS receiver, PC, UPS, power strip and remote boot device. UCLA integrates and installs.
System Specifications • Fluxgate Magnetometer • ±72KnT dynamic range @ 0.01nT Resolution (~23 bits) • Offset DAC system for 256 possible ranges per axis • 2 Vectors per second data rate • Low Power < 4W • Small Size 22cm x 13cm x 5cm • Ruggedized All Weather Sensor Design • USB interface for data retrieval and firmware upload • Noise spectral density <=50pT/sqrt(Hz) @ 1Hz

GBO Hardware Milestones • Goal – Deliver 11 GBO Magnetometers to UCB
UCLA Support for THEMIS • UCLA has delivered all but one unit and will meet that delivery date. • UCLA is ready now to provide support to THEMIS campaign.
