  1. How to Set Up a System for Teaching Files, Conferences, and Clinical Trials Medical Imaging Resource Center

  2. MIRC InfoRad Courses • How to Set Up a System for Teaching Files, Conferences, and Clinical Trials • How to Author MIRC Teaching Files • MIRC Case Studies: Using MIRC for Education and Research • Web Classroom Sessions

  3. MIRC Objective Support the production, storage, indexing and distribution of medical imaging resources: • Teaching files • Scientific & technical documentation • Research images & datasets • Clinical trials data

  4. MIRC Concepts The key concepts: • MIRC is a community of cooperating libraries on the Internet. • The libraries cooperate by supporting a common query mechanism. • The query mechanism allows users to find information wherever it is stored. • May also be used behind firewall for local-only use

  5. Supported Information Storage Formats • Images: DICOM, GIF, JPEG, PNG • Hyperlinks to other web content • Virtually any content that is displayable in a web browser • Pointers to other files for downloading

  6. MIRC Index Server User Query Service RSNA Internet Index Server MIRC Sites Index Server

  7. The RSNA MIRC Software • Query • Storage • Submit Service • Author Service • DICOM Service • Admin • File Cabinets • Private • Public

  8. Query Service • Query single site, selected sites or entire community • Standard query form • 31 defined query fields: • Free text • Document attributes • Document content • Clinical content • Image attributes • Patient attributes • Links to Storage Service Functions

  9. Query Form

  10. Select Site(s)

  11. Enter Search Terms

  12. Admin / Submit / Author

  13. Query Service • Two display formats for query results: • Standard query results • Title (hyperlink) • Author • Abstract • Access restrictions, publication date • Case Navigator • Random or ordered • Known and unknown presentations

  14. Standard Query Results

  15. Case Navigator

  16. Storage Service • Provides for the storage and indexing of documents on the Storage Service • A single MIRC site can have multiple Storage Services for different purposes

  17. XML Server • Serves documents to users on the web • Special support for XML files to allow for transformation from XML to other formats • Display formats • page, tab, mstf (MIRC Standard Teaching File) • User-selectable transformations for specialized data • Support for exporting documents and locally referenced objects

  18. XML Server • Support for access control for: • read, update, export • Control of access by: • owner, users, roles (user groups), public • Support for private (owner-only) sections of documents • Control of publication authority

  19. Submit Service • Allows clients to upload MIRC documents • Supports connections from client-side authoring tools • Supports uploading documents via a browser • Accepts uploads in the format exported by the XML Server

  20. Author Service • Allows authenticated users to create MIRC documents directly on the Storage Service • Supports multiple templates to allow for the creation of different kinds of documents • Links to the File Service to allow for inserting links to images and other documents

  21. DICOM Service • Storage Service Function • Receives DICOM objects from PACS, workstations, modalities, … • Automatic document generation • Images grouped into documents by study • Template-driven • Automatic JPEG generation from the DICOM • Programmable anonymization (de-identification)

  22. DICOM Service • Automatic trial patient ID generation • Connection to other DICOM Services for clinical trials • Support for encrypted communications (SSL) • DICOM import / DICOM export • Secure import / export with https

  25. Admin Service Manages Storage Service • Control the documents • Adjudicate the input queue for non-publishers • Configure the Storage Service • Configure the DICOM Service • Control and monitor the DICOM Service • Manage users and roles

  26. File Service • MIRC Site Function • One service for all Storage Services on the site • Each authenticated user has a private File Service for storage of files • One public File Service for the site • Public File Service receives DICOM objects • The File Service connects to the Author Service to allow drag and drop during authoring

  28. The RSNA MIRC Software • Available on the RSNA MIRC site • http://mirc.rsna.org • Click the Downloads link in the header

  29. The RSNA MIRC Software • Runs on Mac, Windows, Linux • Three components: • Java • Tomcat • MIRC • All components are free • MIRC source release in December • MIRC Users Group meeting • Wednesday 12/1/04 8 a.m.
