  • What does SCUBA stand for?
  • Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus
snorkeling
Snorkeling
  • What is necessary to snorkel?
  • Mask
  • Snorkel
  • Fins
slide4
Mask
  • The purpose of the mask is to surroundthe eyes with air so one can see.
slide6

A scuba diver would use a high volume mask

  • The advantage of a high volume mask is there is better vision and a wider angle of vision
slide7
Fins
  • Fins increase the power of the foot.
  • The two basic types of fins are
  • A. Full foot fins
  • B. Open heel fins
slide9

The full foot fin is best for a skin diver while the open heel fin is best for the scuba diver

  • More Power!
snorkel
Snorkel
  • The snorkel allows you to swim on the surface without constantly lifting your face above the water to breathe.
  • A large bore is better for skin diving.
slide11

The snorkel is always worn on the left side in order to avoid confusion with the scuba regulator which comes from the right side.

wetsuit
Wetsuit
  • Includes the boots, body suit, hood, gloves
  • The purpose of the wetsuit is to prevent body heat from escaping.
how does the wetsuit work
How does the wetsuit work?
  • A thin layer of water will seep in between the suit and skin and is quickly warmed.
  • Heat escapes slowly through the neoprene and the body retains most of its natural heat. The body and water layer next to the body stay warm
weight belt
Weight Belt
  • A diver wearing a full wetsuit floats very well. The wt. belt will counteract the buoyancy of foam neoprene.
slide18

A diver will need more weight in salt water.

  • Salt water is more dense so the diver will have more flotation
  • A body type with a higher percent of muscle tissue than fat tissue will need lessweight
buoyancy compensator bc
Buoyancy Compensator (BC)
  • The purpose of the BC is to counteract the weight of the weight belt and to provide an adjustable buoyancy control system. One a diver is down, the goal is to achieve neutral buoyancy.
what does this mean
What does this mean?
  • A diver will neither float up or sink too deep; they will just hang in the water
regulator
Regulator
  • The regulator provides the diver with a large supply of air from a small container.
  • The regulator adjusts air flow so that the air is at the same pressure as the surrounding water.
why shouldn t a diver hold their breath
Why shouldn’t a diver hold their breath?
  • If a diver ascends, air will expand; expanding the lungs 4 times normal size. Their lungs can embolize.
what is the purpose of the pressure gauge
What is the purpose of the pressure gauge?
  • The diver can determine how much air they have in their tank at any time.
  • A diver should begin their ascent at 500 psi.
what is the purpose of the depth gauge
What is the purpose of the depth gauge?
  • A diver can always determine their depth.
  • A diver should record their deepest depth because of nitrogen saturation.
scuba tank
Scuba Tank
  • There are different sizes and types of tanks. Tanks are either composed of steel or aluminum. The most common is the aluminum tanks. The most common size is 3000 psi
can anyone rent scuba tanks
Can anyone rent scuba tanks?
  • No;One must have a certification card.
  • Ex. SSI , PADI, NAUI
