What is Scuba Diving? • A form of underwater diving in which a diver uses a scuba set in order to breathe underwater. • one of the most well known and loved sports in the world • Scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas, usually consisting of compressed air. • Allows the diver a greater freedom of movement. • Incredibly fun, enjoyable, educational.

Term “SCUBA” stands for: Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. • Scuba diving enables divers to stay underwater significantly longer than with breath-holding techniques used in free-diving. • While in the water, a scuba diver usually moves around underwater by using swim fins attached to the feet.

  4. Different Types Include: • Recreational Diving • Technical Diving • Public Safety Diving • Scientific Diving • Professional Diving

Benefits of Scuba Diving • Experience the feeling of weightlessness. • Explore relative quiet, beautiful sights of the underwater world. • Opportunity to see many different creatures up close. • Activities such as photography, hunting, and gathering, make diving more challenging and rewarding.

Diving in the past • Interest in the underwater world has always existed. • Driven by curiosity and the need for food, people have ventured the Earth’s seas for thousands of years. • Records exist of sponge divers, military divers, and even salvage regulations dating back to around 3000 BC. • Two methods used for diving were breath holding, and the use of an air-filled bell. • Technologies in diving have been improved, leading to today’s scuba system.

Can anyone go scuba diving? • Scuba diving can only be undertaken by anyone over the age of 12, who is in normal health, and has a reasonable amount of physical fitness. • In addition, you need to also have good swimming skills, although you don’t need to be a professional swimmer. • If you have any medical conditions that may affect your performance in the water, then you should NOT take part in scuba diving.

Are There any Risks? • Yes - all activities have some kind of risks. • Precautions must be taken in order to prevent serious injury. • Pressure changes with depth. • This can severely injure bodily air spaces if you are not in good health or if you fail to equalize the pressure in the body air spaces with the surrounding pressure. • Many dangerous sea creatures

How Can I Prevent Any Risks? • You must have sufficient physical fitness to prevent any accidents from happening. • You must not only depend on the equipment for your well-being. • You must be comfortable in water. • Most accidents are preventable. • You must also have the proper equipment for scuba diving

  11. What do I need? • Mask • Snorkel • Fins • Wetsuit • Weighting System • Scuba Cylinders (Air Tank) • Alternate Air Source (i.e. backup scuba unit) • Regulator
