  2. Personal space 2 and often 3 feet is appropriate; Gestures and touch not common in initial encounter; Be casual when familiar with each other;

  3. First meeting • A happy smile; • A firm hand shake; • Direct eye contact with a nod of the head; • No turning away;

  4. Kiss and hug As for the Americans, they do not kiss or hug in greeting out side a familiar or intimate relationship, though it is common to see the Americans greeting each other with a kissing on the cheek in the largest metropolitan centres.

  5. Take the initiative • You should never wait to be introduced; • Take the initiative to introduce yourself in a small group; • It may be not necessary in a large group to introduce yourself to everyone; • Just saying hello with a wave of hand is fine, in a social setting; • Avoid handshaking in less formal contexts;

  6. facial expression • the best expression is a happy one--americans generally "put on a happy face" when they "go out into the world". • the typical greeting is "Hi, how are you?" or "How 'ya doing?". the tyical and expected response is "Good,thanks. How are you?" • the response is expected whether you know each other or not.

  7. tone of voice your voice tone should always be pleasant and and have volume moderate. be polite but direct,americans value directness --"get to the point". for americans, a loud or emotional speech is not viewed as being very oppropriate in any public setting.
