  14. TECHNIQUES OF NURSING SERVICE ADMINISTRATION….. • NURSING CARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS • STAFFING SCHEDULES

  15. Case Method • In this method nurses assume total responsibility for meeting all the needs of assigned patients during their time on duty. • It provides nurses with high autonomy and responsibility. • The patient care coordinator supervises and evaluates all care given on the unit.

  16. Functional Method • The head nurse or the charge nurse has the complete responsibility of the client. • This implements classic scientific management principles which emphasize efficiency, division of labour, and rigid controls.

  17. Team Nursing • Designed to accommodate several categories of personnel in meeting the comprehensive nursing needs of a group of clients. • Involves decentralisation of a nursing unit and professional head nurse authority in which a unit is divided into teams.

  18. Primary Nursing • It involves total nursing care, directed by a nurse on a 24 hours basis as long as the client is under care. • When the primary nurse is not on duty care is provided by other junior nurses based on the care plan established by primary nurse ,so segments of care are often delegated

  19. Case Management • It focuses on entire episode of illness including all settings in which client receives care. • The nurse may work across agencies, such as ambulatory clinics, acute care settings or may make visits to home or health care agencies • sometimes called second generation primary nursing/outcomes management/clinical resource management.

  20. Differentiated Practice • It takes into account the competency ,education and skill level of nurses. • The aim is to match the patients needs with nursing competencies to facilitate the effective and efficient use of nursing resources

  21. Collaborative Practice • It includes interaction of interdisciplinary teams favouring collaboration between nurses and physicians or other health team members.

  22. STAFFING SCHEDULES

  23. Centralised scheduling The functions of centralised scheduler includes • scheduling employees according to staffing policies • reallocation of staff • maintaining reports and records • maintaining communication with other departments.

  24. Cont….. The responsibilities of managers includes • developing a master staffing pattern, • establishing procedures for adjustment of staff, • clarifying requirements for each job description and staff position • ,promoting ,disciplining and firing employees when appropriate.

  25. Decentralised scheduling • Here nurse managers are given authority and responsibility to staff their own units • staff get personalised attention, staffing become easier and less complicated But • it can used to punish and reward • it is time consuming for managers • resources are used less efficiently • cost containment is more difficult

  26. Self scheduling • Coordinated by staff nurses. • Saves manager scheduling time • Helps develop accountability and autonomy • Increases job satisfaction • Improves team spirit • Improves morale • Decreases absenteeism

  27. rotating work shifts • Permanent shift • Part time staffing • Block/ cyclical scheduling • Full time staff Different working schedules… Eight-Hour shift • Weekend alternative Ten hour shift • 12-hour shifts
