Reboot! Matthew 24:1-1
Introduction • We are entering the apocalyptic section of Matthew’s Gospel • Apocalypse is used for the “end of the Earth” • It really is referring to an end of a way of life • When a civilization dies it has reached its apocalypse
Points in the Biblical Narrative (1 of 3) • Jesus’ disciples needed to understand that the Kingdom of Heaven was not going to be an armed revolt • Mount of Olives the Shekinah went there when she left the Temple (Ezekiel 11:23), which symbolizes the Shekinah left the Temple with Jesus • War the Zealot movement
Points in the Biblical Narrative (2 of 3) • birth pangs a metaphor for an apocalypse (death of one civilization and the possible rise of a new one). The Temple destruction in 70 CE was an apocalypse • “End of the World” and “End of the age” a reconstitution of society to a high ethical standard
Points in the Biblical Narrative (3 of 3) • After Jesus’ death, the Romans made things worse in Judea • False Messiahs were the Zealot who promised everything but delivered nothing
For Us Today (1 of 2) • Jesus spoke of a new way • God must be involved in Human affairs • If everyone accepted the Gospel of love and grace the world would be better • Today’s false Messiahs are the cultish groups who promise everything as they torch our cities
For Us Today (2 of 2) • Christianity needs to come together as one faith to combat the false Messiahs • We need an “end of the age” of all divisions: race, religion, and others. Honest discussions and debates were the norms until the century changed. • The world needs a REBOOT
