Sermon Theme: Salt & Light. Matthew 5: 13 – 16.
Matthew 5: 13 – 16. 13“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
A CHRISTIANS INFLUENCE Vs.13 A. Salt • Seasoning • Preservative B. The use of Salt • Salt makes you thirsty • It is a seasoning • It is a preservative
C. You are the Salt of the Earth • Let your influence season peoples lives for the kingdom • It only takes a little salt to flavour a whole community a whole neighborhood a whole workplace. • The salt is no good if it never leaves the saltshaker • We are not of the world but we live in the world.
G. Campbell Morgan:“Jesus, looking out over the multitudes of His day, saw the corruption, the disintegration of life at every point, its breakup, its spoliation; and because of His love of the multitudes, He knew the thing that they needed most was the salt in order that the corruption should be arrested.”
A CHRISTIAN’S TESTIMONY Light • Light is described as a form of energy: • Light is a symbol of divine presence. • Who is the true source of light? “Then Jesus spoke to them again saying I am the light of the world.” He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).
Functions of Light • Expose darkness: • Light & darkness can never co-exist • Does my life help people see more clearly?
Light under a Bushel (Vs.15) • We are called to let our light shine to the maximum. • You are the Light • We are called to let our light shine to the maximum. • What are we to do with this light? • We are to dispel darkness.
FILLING THE EARTH WITH GOD’S GLORY • Differences between salt and light witnessing • Your influence, your peace, your meekness your mercy is what will make you salty to others around you. • Light is visible: • It works openly. • We are like mirrors as we reflect the light
CONCLUSION. • There has never been a better time for us to be the salt of the earth. • There has never been a better time for us to be the light of the world. • This is our time • You are the salt and the light of the world. • Go & shine.
