  1. Succeeding as a Disciple Matthew 7:13-23

  2. Introduction • Discipleship discussion • The difficulties of discipleship • Why is it here? SUCCESS – to help us to succeed in righteousness

  3. Scripture 13 "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. (Matt. 7:13 NAU) • Narrow Gate – door to the house (small, short, hard to enter, Heaven’s gate) • Wide Gate – door to the vineyard or garden (to let animals in, easy to enter, Hell’s gate)

  4. 15 "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. (Matt. 7:15 NAU) • False prophets – they look like us, listen to their words and watch their actions

  5. 17 "So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit (Matt. 7:17 NAU) • Good fruit – good works • Bad fruit – evil works • Two fruit trees next to each other. One produces sweet fruit. The other one produces sour fruit. • Same soil – good and bad fruit trees can grow • Warning about the church

  6. 19 "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (Matt. 7:19 NAU) • Productive soil is scarce in the Middle East • Trees that do not produce are removed to make room for new trees • Removing “followers” who do not do good works for Jesus

  7. 21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. (Matt. 7:21 NAU) • “Lord, Lord” is a term referring to eschatology (end times) • People will call on the Lord but if Jesus has not seen good works from them He will not save them

  8. 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' (Matt. 7:22-23 NAU) • Repetition of the point of no forgiveness for those who are not following the commandments and ways of our Lord Jesus

  9. For us Today • For centuries the church used this passage to control people • High Commitment churches are growing • Each of us has to decide if we are producing good fruit
