  2. Introduction • John’s Gospel for Gentiles? • John’s Gospel for Jews • Written in a Semitic style • Contains a literal and allegorical form • Heavy usage of Hebraic language and culture

  3. Literal interpretation • Continuation of the disciple calling process • Philip then Nathanael

  4. Allegorical Interpretation • Nathanael is an Israelite with no deceit (v. 47) Psalm 32:1 A Psalm of David. A Maskil. How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! 2 How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! (Ps. 32:1-2 NAU) • Forgiveness of sin • Covering up sin before God • We need God’s forgiveness for sin • Jesus offers God’s forgiveness of Sin Continued next slide

Heaven opens up • Genesis 28:12 • Briefly – the 4 main interpretations • 4 kingdoms that dominated Israel; Babylon, Persia, Greece Edom (the current situation which started with Rome – Kingdom of David has not yet been reestablished) • The Land’s Greatness – added protection when Jacob was in the Promised Land • Angels are messengers of God • Mount Sinai (in depth in next slide)

  6. Mount Sinai explored deeper • God on the top of the Ladder • God on the top of Mount Sinai • Angels are symbolic of the Torah being given to the people • Torah is the bridge (the connection) between God and us

For us today • Jesus forgives sin (Ps. 32) • Jesus is the “bridge” between us and God – we need a mediator (Gen. 28:12) • Jesus is the Torah (John 1:1-3) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (Jn. 1:1-3 NAU) • A part of Jesus’ mission is given to us in John 1 • Believe in Jesus who forgives sin, covers them when we are before the Father and connects us to God.
