Introduction • The cleaning tank incident at the Paks NPP on 10th April 2003 resulted in severe fuel damage of 30 assemblies. • The fuel rods heated up due to insufficient cooling. • The zirconium components suffered heavy oxidation. • The final quenching of the assemblies lead to fragmentation of brittle material.

  3. Introduction • In 2005 AEKI launched a new experimental programme • Duration: 3-year (2005-2007) • The programme is supported by the National Office for Research and Technology of Hungary.

  4. Objectives • The objectives of the project are: • Better undrestanding of the phenomena that took place during the Paks-2 incident • Improve our knowledge on the behaviour of NPP fuel under accident conditions • Support model development, paying special attention to the effect of Hydrogen uptake on cladding embrittlement

  5. Experimental programme • Separate effect test in H-rich steam (COHYRA tests, separate presentation by E. Perez) • CODEX-CT-1 test • Bundle test with final quenching • Will be performed in 2006 • CODEX-CT-2 test • Bundle test with slow cooling down • Will be performed in 2007

  6. Reconstruction of CODEX facility • Special conditions are needed to simulate the Paks-2 incident, for this reason the CODEX facility will be rebuilt. • There will be no internal heating in the fuel rods • Heat-up will be provided by the surrounding heaters • Stagnant atmosphere (steam+H2) will be used instead of one-dimensional flow

CODEX-CT-1 test • The test will start with a tank filled up with water • During the first phase of the test water will evaporated from the upper part of the volume and a water level will be established at the elevation of by-pass • The second phase will include high temperature (1000-1200 oC) oxidation in H-rich steam atmosphere for several hours

  11. CODEX-CT-1 test • The tests will be terminated by quenching: • First water will be injected from the bottom into the assemblies with low flowrate • Later top injection will be initiated with high flowrate from one side of the tank.

  12. CODEX-CT-2 test • The same conditions will be applied as in CT-1 test, but without final quench, • Final cooling down will be performed in Ar flow in order to preserve the state of oxidised fuel rods • CT-2 is considered as a reserve test as well, if the degradation in test CT-1 will not reach similar degree as seen after the incident in the original fuel

  13. CONCLUSIONS • The comparison of CODEX-CT-1 and CODEX-CT-2 will make possible drawing conclusions on the effect of quenching on the degradation of oxidised fuel bundles. • The new experimental programme will provide new information on the behaviour of fuel rods in H-rich accident conditions.
