The 5 Areas of Self Esteem • Physical : How you feel about your body and health. • Emotional: How you feel about your feelings and how you express them. • Social : How you feel about your ability to get along with others. • Intellectual: How you feel about your ability to think and solve problems. • Spiritual: How you feel about your religious beliefs or your place in the “BIG Picture: .

  3. Why is it important ? It is important because…….. • it helps children feel good about themselves • It builds their confidence • It helps you better understand your problems

  4. Why Else is it important….. • It will cause you to have better social skills • More self respect • More self respect for others • Have better control over your emotions

  5. How Can We improve Self Esteem in Children ? • Encourage decision making • Praise positive behaviors • Follow the child lead • Accept that its normal to have disappointments

  6. How Else…..? • Separate the child from the failure • Give the child responsibilities…...........AND • Be kind : )

  7. Quick recap What does self esteem mean? What might have happened to someone to give them low self esteem?

  8. Now lets have a look at practical way of building self esteem “I can identify my skills and talent”

  9. Task 1 Draw around each hand. On one hand, in the middle, write: “My skills and talents”. On each finger write something you are good at. It could be a hobby or something less clearly defined like ‘good listener’. On the other hand write “My aspirations for the future” and write something you want when you grow up, e.g. what kind of job, where do you want to live, university, a family, pets, holidays/travel, charity work, etc. Who will be the next celebrity/famous person/inventor in the class?!

  10. Positive Traits Being positive! Share with your partner what positive traits you consistently demonstrate.

  11. How did that activity change the way you feel about yourself?

  12. Task 2 Your positive attributes Write all the positive attributes about your personality inside the outline. Then draw another outline around your body. Swap your pictures around and- write all the positive attributes your partner demonstrates (how they come across).

  15. Circle Time Rules and rights of Circle Time- Remind me! Activities • Pass an object around with each person saying something nice about the person before. Then reverse the order when you get to the end. Focus on non-academic personalities traits or skills. • How would you describe yourself in three words? • Share this with a partner - do they agree with all your words? If not, why not? • Anything else you would like to discuss about self esteem? Question Time

Self Esteem “Self Esteem by definition is a realistic respect for or favourable impression of oneself.” Children and young people with high self-esteem: • Have a positive view of themselves. • Adapt to new situations. • Can play on their own or in groups. • Will try to work things out for themselves but are willing to ask if unsure. • Can be proud of their achievements. • Can admit their mistakes and learn from them. • Are willing to try new things and adapt to change.
