French & Russians Hate/Fear the Germans Imperialism- taking over or controlling another country or region Militarism- glorification of the military 4. Area between the Trenches 2. Barren & Bombed out Unrestricted Submarine Warfare- Sink ships on sight. But they sink many US ships and this makes America angry. Direct cause of US entering WWI

  5. Treaty of Versailles Wilson’s 14 Points- Attempt to make WWI the “War to end all Wars” called for no punishments, League of Nations & for all people to determine where they live. The Big Four at the conference: Clemenceau, George, Wilson & Orlando Treaty is very Harsh to Germany- Ignores Wilson’s 14 Points-Punish Germany Germany had to take blame for WWI & pay huge reparations: pay money to the winners of WWI- causes hyperinflation Causes rise of fascism in Germany

Russian Revolution Causes Dissatisfaction with Czarist Rule 1.Government was very inefficient and corrupt Leader of Russia is Tsar/Czar Nicholas II- an absolute monarch Bolsheviks- Hardline communists who called for a violent overthrow of the government 1. Led by Vladimir Lenin 2. Motto “Peace, Land & Bread” for all Treaty of Brest-Litovsk- Russia withdraws from WWI to concentrate on Revolution

  9. Fascism Strong, dictatorial, governments that are very nationalistic & imperialistic Founded in Italy by Benito Mussolini- March on Rome 3. Also used by Adolph Hitler- being elected and then exploiting constitution to take control Totalitarian Government: government, which a one party dictatorship attempts to regulate every aspect of the lives of citizens. Uses Censorship, mass arrests and secret police to keep power.

Taking Sudetenland & Czechoslovakia Appeasement: policy followed by Britain to try to stop another war 1. Policy of giving into an aggressor’s demands in order to keep the peace 2. Britain signs Munich Agreement giving Germany Sudetenland hoping this will stop Hitler from wanting more land

Types of Warfare Technology Blitzkrieg- “Lightening War” Used by Germans in WWII- used combined forces of Tanks, Airplanes and mobile infantry to achieve great advances Sonar- Use of sound waves to detect submarines under water Radar- Use of microwaves to detect airplanes before they can be seen or heard. Later put on ships to find submarines & other ships Aircraft Carrier- Ship capable of carrying a large number of airplanes anywhere in the war- will be the most important type of ship in WWII Atomic Bomb- a nuclear weapon that causes a massive amount of destruction

December 7, 1941 Propaganda-The spreading of ideas to promote a certain cause, or to damage an opposing cause
