  2. Think About It … • Let’s make a list of foreign nations some of us have visited … • Why might it have been helpful, even necessary to have a guide or interpreter with you? • This month we look at the guide, interpreter, advocate given to us by Jesus Today we look at the ministry of the Holy Spirit who serves as our life Guide

  3. Listen for an announcement that might upset the disciples. John 16:5-7 (NIV) "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' [6] Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. [7] But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

  4. The Counselor Is Sent • What filled the disciples with grief? • What kinds of thoughts do you think would be going through their minds when Jesus announced that He was leaving? • Why do we sometimes think our lives would be better if Jesus were in our physical presence?

  5. The Counselor Is Sent • When have you said good-bye to someone in order for something beneficial to occur? • So how was it for their good (and ours) that Jesus went away? • What do you think Christ’s going away had to do with the coming of the Holy Spirit? • What are some benefits of the Holy Spirit working in your life today?

  6. Listen for the role of the Holy Spirit. John 16:8-11 (NIV) When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: [9] in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; [10] in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; [11] and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

  7. The Counselor Reveals • What are the three things of which the Holy Spirit convicts? • What are some other words your translations use for convict? What are some other synonyms? • The initial purpose of the Spirit’s conviction • lead men to confession, repentance • bring sinners to faith in Christ

  8. The Counselor Reveals • The continued purpose of the Spirit’s conviction • to draw believers closer to Jesus • to convince and enable believers to live lives of righteousness • to separate us more and more away from the world, unto God (also known as the process of sanctification)

  9. The Counselor Reveals • What might this have to do with why Jesus did not give us a list of specific sins (drunkenness, pride, lying, stealing, etc.)?  The Holy Spirit works in people’s lives to guide and enable them to live ways that are righteous and holy (separate)

  10. The Counselor Reveals • Why do unbelievers resist the convicting work of the Spirit? • Why might believers resist the convicting work of the Spirit?  God's Holy Spirit will continue to do His convincing work as long as we live  God wants to shape us and mold us to be more like Jesus every day

  11. Listen for Jesus descriptions of the tasks of the Holy Spirit John 16:12-15 (NIV) "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. [13] But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

  12. Listen for Jesus descriptions of the tasks of the Holy Spirit [14] He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. [15] All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

  13. The Counselor Points to Jesus • What tasks are given to God's Holy Spirit? • How do you know when someone is not telling you the truth? • How would you know if the Spirit is communicating Truth to you? • Why do we need the Spirit in order for us to understand the truth? Isn’t reading the Bible enough?

  14. The Counselor Points to Jesus • Verse 13 speaks of the Spirit declaring “what is to come.” How does this provide hope and encouragement? • Verse 14 speaks of the Spirit’s task to glorify Jesus. Why is it so important that the Spirit always points to Jesus?

  15. Applications • Jesus came to be on earth physically in order to die and rise again for our redemption • He limited Himself to time and space • God wanted His presence to be with (in) every believer • Thus He sent His Spirit to be everywhere to be with each individual – as a personal counselor

  16. Applications • The Spirit convicts (convinces) people of sin, righteousness, and judgment • The basic sin is unbelief • The Spirit convinces us that we can (in God’s power) live a life of righteousness • The Spirit also convinces us that Satan, the source of sin and evil, is judged and defeated … we need not be defeated by him

  17. Applications • The Holy Spirit does not call attention to Himself • He glorifies Jesus • He is the continuing presence of Christ with believers • He enables and empowers us to live lives of righteousness and service
