  1. Good morning! • Prepare for your warm up by taking out some paper and something to write with • You need some paper for this warm up. • Make sure you are seated and quiet when the bell rings! • Take out your HW (if we had any), which I will check for completion while you write today’s warm up.

  2. Review the year/Poetry classMonday, June 9, 2014 7 classes before exam Carefully listen to the poem as I read to you. Do your best to understand what the poem says, and write down in your own words what the poem means. (please remember that “thee” and “thou” and “thy” are the familiar words, not the formal ones)

  3. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upTuesday, June 3, 2014 Our plan today: Make a circle of desks. Take out your HW writing and your 10 interpretive questions. Write a response to the following: There are two scenes in Much Ado when the characters wear actual masks. What about figurative masks? Think about some scenes where the characters either try to hide who they are, or say something they don’t really believe. What is going on here? What does Shakespeare want to show us? In the play, what reveals truth? Explain.

  4. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upThursday, May 29, 2014 Remember school starts tomorrow at 10:30! Our plan today: Stretch Rehearse for 9 minutes & collect Scene Project Grade Sheets in groups Dress rehearsal for Act 5 group Act 3 scene performances in costume (we will not talk between scenes, but maybe we will afterwards)

  5. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upWednesday, May 28, 2014 You have six minutes to write this warm up to hand in: Think about yesterday’s class and the challenges of performing a scene. What did you learn about the challenges of acting from watching your class mates act their Much Ado scenes? What did they do well that you want to be sure to do? Consider choices about movement and the use of the voice. What did they do that you do NOT want to do the same way? Consider choices about movement and the use of the voice. How will you improve on their example?

  6. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upTuesday, May 27, 2014 Write this warm up: Read your lines and cues a few times to make sure you know them. Regular review is essential for confidence and accuracy. Are you ready to act as if you were in your character’s situation? Think about what your character knows and expects as the scene starts. What does he or she want? How do you try to get it? Consider how you will create “the illusion of the first time.”

  7. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upFriday, May 23, 2014 Write this warm up: Directors and designers have to make choices about how a show or a scene will look and sound. Think about your scene from Much Ado About Nothing. How will your character dress? Be specific about color, style, era, length, tightness, texture, and so on. How will the clothing reflect the time, place, and tone of your scene? Things that actors touch and could carry, such as a book, a bottle, and so on, are called props. What choices about props have you made? Describe the props in detail. How will the props reflect the time, place, and tone of your scene?

  8. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upThursday, May 22, 2014 Take out your HW (your character biography). Write this warm up: Actors have to develop the playwright’s ideas about characters in greater depth in order to play them well. Think about your scene from Much Ado About Nothing. Now think about your character in the scene. Does your character change during the scene, or learn anything from what happens in the scene? Explain. What does she or he do after the scene? Describe what he or she does in detail (you might have to guess based on clues within the text).

  9. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upWednesday, May 21, 2014 Take out your HW (your lines on cards). Write this warm up: Actors have to develop the playwright’s ideas about characters in greater depth in order to play them well. Think about your scene from Much Ado About Nothing. Now think about your character in the scene. What did he or she do right before the scene? Describe this in detail. What does she or he do after the scene? Describe that in detail.

  10. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upTuesday, May 20, 2014 Take out your HW (the scene you printed from the play). Write this warm up to turn in: Think about your scene from Much Ado About Nothing. Write a brief summary of what happens in the scene. What character (or characters) will you play? How did you figure out which character you would play, and why is this character a good choice for you to play?

  11. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upMonday, May 19, 2014 Take out your HW. Today we will choose groups and scenes from the play. What are some of the challenges you might face doing this project? What are you looking forward to? How can we support each other to do our best on the scene project?

  12. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upThursday, May 15, 2014 Take out your HW. Think about masks. When have you worn a mask? Why did you wear it? Have you ever worn a mask, or a disguise, when it wasn’t Halloween? If so, why did you do that? What’s the meaning of wearing masks at Halloween, or Mardi Gras, or any other festival? Are you familiar with masks in Native American and African cultures? Write something about them if you can.

  13. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upWednesday, May 14, 2014 Take out your HW. What’s the most enjoyable aspect of reading Much Ado About Nothing out loud, and why? What’s the most challenging aspect of reading Much Ado About Nothing out loud, and why? If acting is difficult, why is it difficult? Explain.

  14. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upTuesday, May 13, 2014 Don’t look at your books, but try to remember what we have read so far in 5.1 and the rest of the play. What do Leonato and Antonio want with Claudio in the first part of the scene? What does Benedick want with Claudio in the scene? Explain why Hero’s virginity is so important to Claudio, the Prince, and Leonato.

  15. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upMonday, May 12, 2014 A French scene works this way: a new scene number is given when a character enters or leaves the stage (for example, in 5.1, line 47) Complete the chart Write the line numbers that start each French Scene Mark an “X” where each character is on stage

  16. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upFriday, May 9, 2014 Take a pop quiz on Act 4 Scene 1

  17. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upThursday, May 8, 2014 Take out your homework from this week Then, choose A or B or C and write • Remember a time when someone hurt your feelings, or disappointed you, or betrayed you, and you wanted to get at them. How did that feel, and what did you do? • Remember a time when someone embarrassed you and hurt you, and what they said or did was based on wrong information. What happened, and how did that feel? • If neither applies, create an experience that would fit and imagine the details.

  18. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upWednesday, May 7, 2014 How did the performance affect your understanding and appreciation of the play? What choices did you like? What did you imagine differently? Explain in a paragraph.

  19. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upMonday, May 5, 2014 Take out your HW, which I will check for completion while you write today’s warm up. When you say something is funny, what do you mean? When we laugh, why do we laugh? This is not an easy question. Get specific. Think of a joke that’s OK to tell in class, and remember the details. Now prepare to tell that joke to the class.

  20. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upFriday, May 2, 2014 Take out your HW, which I will check for completion while you write today’s warm up. Why does Benedick believe what he overheard from Claudio, the Prince, and Leonato? Why does Beatrice believe what she overheard from Hero and Ursula? Explain in a paragraph that you will turn in, using evidence from the text.

  21. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upThursday, May 1, 2014 Take out your HW, which I will check for completion while you write today’s warm up. Imagine you are Hero staging a conversation for Beatrice to overhear so that she will fall in love with Benedick. What would you say? What would you want her to think about? Write an explanation of what you think Hero should say (which Beatrice would eavesdrop) to make Beatrice fall in love with Benedick.

  22. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upWednesday, April 30, 2014 Take out your HW, which I will check for completion while you write today’s warm up. A good-sized chunk of the play so far has been leading up to today’s scenes. Beatrice and Benedick have a “merry war” of words whenever they meet. But Don Pedro, the prince, has a plan for them, which he suggests at the end of 2.1 (Act 2, Scene 1), pp. 57-58. What does he plan for Beatrice and Benedick? How will he make that happen? Whose help does he need? And why does he want to do this? Write a paragraph that explains it all.

  23. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upTuesday, April 29, 2014 Think about a person’s reputation for loyalty. Would you want a friend who couldn’t be trusted? Would you want to date, or marry, someone who was known to sleep around? What would it take for you to be convinced that someone is a slut? Would a report be enough? How about pictures, or a video? Or would you need to see with your own eyes? Respond to these questions with a paragraph.

  24. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upMonday, April 28, 2014 Friday’s class was small, but we read well into Act 2 If you weren’t with us, and haven’t read Act 2, start with the summary right away, then begin the read the text. If you were with us, review what happens in the first scene.

  25. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upFriday, April 25, 2014 While you write the warm up, I will collect your HW. Did you know that Wednesday marked 450 years since William Shakespeare was born? Write about your experience as an actor. Write about what you have done and how you have enjoyed it. If all of your acting experience has been in this class, write about that. Also consider what might be in the way of your acting, such as fears and anxieties. I have found that, sometimes, in order to act and be interesting, we have to push things (feelings, fears, nerves) out of the way… does that make any sense to you? How? Explain.

  26. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upWednesday, April 23, 2014 Happy Shakespeare’s birthday! Read a classmate’s ten interpretive questions about Act 1, and answer one in a complete paragraph to turn in.

  27. Much Ado About Nothingwarm upTuesday, April 22, 2014 Read pages 23-25, lines 284-323, the scene between Claudio and the Prince after Benedick exits. Answer the following questions in complete sentences. • Why might Claudio ask his question in line 288? Is the answer good news? Why? • How does Claudio answer the Prince’s question (line 290)? • Look carefully at the Prince’s speech at the end of the scene (lines 311-end). Summarize the Prince’s plan.

  29. Warm up Thursday, 4/10/14 • This warm up will be turned in • Write your name, date, and book number at the top of your warm up • The topic is rumors. Think about your relationships with friends and family. Have any of your relationships with other people been affected by rumors you have heard about them, or rumors that they have heard about you? If so, share the story briefly. I am not trying to embarrass anyone, so feel free NOT to use the names of others, or go ahead and change details to keep embarrassing secrets secret. If you can’t think of a true example, please make one up.
