  1. Organisations: School, Home & Environment Lesson 1 – School Registration Systems

  2. Starter • Logon • Monitors off. • Let’s take the register…

  3. Objectives • Understand what a school registration system is. • Know the benefits and drawbacks of school registration systems. • Be able to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of school registration systems in context.

  4. What is a school registration system? • Replaces old paper style registers. • Allows student attendance to be tracked. • Used for attendance in AM/PM registrations and throughout lessons.

  5. Quick Task • In groups of 3-4 • On A3 paper write down the advantages and disadvantages of having an electronic register in School. • Each group will be asked to contribute at least one good and bad point of electronic registration. • Your group has 6 minutes to complete the task. • Try and put it in context of Conyers! • Also try and imagine or describe a DIFFERENT way students could be registered in lessons. Think outside the box.

  6. Summary: What are the benefits? • Student attendance can be tracked throughout lessons more accurately than paper. • Attendance can be monitored by Year head / manager. • Tutor can track progress of their class throughout the day. • Keep everyone informed of pupil attendance. E.g. all teachers for a pupil can see whether they are in school in previous lessons. • Better accuracy than paper. • Teachers can be quickly informed of absence etc. • Paper costs lower & helping environment. • More secure than paper based registers.

  7. Summary: What are the drawbacks? • Cost to introduce. • Cost of staff training. • A change in working practices may take a while. • Data security may be an issue. • Viruses could destroy data. • Power cut could result in register not being made available. • Problems during fire drill? • What if teachers forget to take the register?

  8. Today’s Task A local school, consisting of only 200 pupils would like to switch to an electronic register for Morning and Afternoon registration. The school is not familiar with an electronic register and would like a simplistic example set up to show them. • Using a spreadsheet package, create a system which reflects the plan on the right. • Take a screenshot of it when complete. Underneath explain the benefits and drawbacks of such a system (in a table). • Make a recommendation to the school head as to whether they should switch or not.

  9. Objectives Review • Understand what a school registration system is. • Know the benefits and drawbacks of school registration systems. • Be able to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of school registration systems in context.

  10. Plenary: Student Selection I will ask three students at random, to suggest a question based on today’s content. I will then ask them to nominate someone to answer. Let’s see if we can review today’s learning! As a final discussion point: How do you see school attendance systems improving in the future? Do you see it being different to how it is now? Use your imagination.
