  3. A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) will • Break down the task into steps Steps and procedures are basically the same thing.

  4. Hazards are what can hurt you • Mitigations are how you plan to protect yourself

  5. Hierarchy of Controls Most Effective The Hierarchy of Controls lists methods of reducing risk based on level of effectiveness. Least Effective

  6. Eliminate • You can’t be hurt by something if you are never exposed to it. • If the hazard is a suspended load, don’t get under the load!

  7. Substitute • In the past, TDI used highly toxic chemicals to process our samples. • Now we use salt water, which presents no hazard to our lab workers or the environment.

  8. Engineering Controls Machinery guards provide a physical barrier between the hazard and the people around the machine.

  9. Administrative Controls Policies and procedures can be used to minimize exposure. • If heat or cold is a hazard, limit exposure times. (take frequent breaks)

  10. Personal Protective Equipment PPE is the last line of defense when exposure cannot be eliminated.

  11. The JSA Process • JSA is to be conducted BEFORE work begins. • After the job, review the JSA to see if any lessons learned can be applied.

  12. Participants • Every person who will participate in the work participates in the JSA process – including contractors.

Lowering the boat is the most dangerous part Inspecting the davit • Worn or damaged cable • Lack of maintenance • Davit crane failure • Quick Release mechanism failure • Crew not familiar with equipment/ procedures • Pressure gauge damage • Hoisting mechanism damage What’s the hazard on your boat?

  16. When you list STEPS, don’t use • Too much detail– Too many steps • Too little detail-- so general that basic steps are not recorded

  17. 10-15 min activity • Instructor- hand out a blank JSA form • As a group, list the steps needed to launch the rescue boat • Identify the hazards of each step • When finished, compare your results to the following slides

  18. Key Steps- Too Many… • Tell the captain • Notify operator of rescue boat crane • Print the checklist • Get a pen and clipboard • Put on PPE • Walk to the rescue boat
