  1. WHITE FERNS By Len Burgess

  2. When a pane of glass is exposed to very cold air on the outside while inside the air is reasonably moist, frost can form.  Known as ice flowers or fern frost, it is remarkable for the intricate patterns it creates.

  3. The surface of the glass influences the way that the ice is formed so that the first process of crystallization, known as nucleation, is randomized.  The patterns, then, are almost infinite in variety

  4. Science aside, ice flowers are a source of wonder, things of elegance and beauty.  They are nature’s art at its most exquisite.

  5. On cold winter mornings, 83-year-old Len Burgess wakes up before dawn, picks up his camera, and checks the storm windows on his Danvers, Massachusetts, home. When conditions are just right, he can photograph delicate ice crystals that form on the surface of the glass between the window panes—and the resulting images are stunningly beautiful

  6. New construction these days employs double or even triple-pane windows. To make them even more efficient, some high-end units come with inert gas between the panes, and/or special coatings. So houses are warmer now and require less gas or oil to heat but… they’re missing out on the magic of window ferns.

  7. Crystal Light - public art installation by Catherine Widgery at the North Temple Bridge Guadalupe station in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States Crystal Light is a response to the dramatic weather of Salt Lake City. It uses water in its different states as the metaphor for the temperature changes and precipitation. The salt crystals of the lake and the spectacular lightening storms over the lake are woven through these images as well. The artist Catherine Widgery used some Len Burgess images in her art installation
