  7. The Kea (Nestor notabilis) is a native bird found in alpine regions on the South Island of New Zealand. The Kea Bird finds car parking lots very intriguing and sometimes you can find these New Zealand parrots gathering around these lots where they enjoy destroying parts of cars, cameras and robbing small objects.

  9. The kea is an unusual parrot. It is often observed in alpine areas, and gained early notoriety among settler farmers for attacks on their sheep. Innately curious, kea are attracted to people wherever they enter its mountain domain, and are a feature at South Island ski-fields and mountain huts.

  10. Greymouth Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region in the South Island of New Zealand. In clear weather, Aoraki/Mount Cook can be clearly seen to the south from near the town. South of Greymouth, nearby Shantytown offers a fascinating insight into the gold rush days of the 1880’s, re-creating the atmosphere of the era.

  21. The Maori are the native inhabitants of New Zealand and are of Polynesian origin numbering over 500,000 today. This is about 15% of New Zealand's population. Over 95 percent of Maori live on New Zealand's North Island.

  22. Today the Maori have generally adjusted well to western culture and the population has increased substantially. Since 1980 the Waitangi Tribunal, a government body established to settle legal claims based on the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, have engaged in recompensing Maori for land that was illegally confiscated.

  25. Kowhai is famous for its beautiful yellow or golden flowers, which is the national flower of New Zealand. The trees flower in early spring and their nectar is a favorite food for Tui and Kereru (wood pigeon). Kowhai's are popular garden and street trees. In Maoritanga, (Maori language) Kowhai means 'yellow’

New Zealand Tea Tree, Broom Tea Tree (Leptospermum scoparium) Early settlers of Australia and New Zealand used the foliage of this plant to brew a tea very high in vitamin C, hence the common name, “Tea Tree”. This is a vigorous, carefree shrub that will grow in just about any well-drained location. The blooming stems are a beautiful addition to cut flower arrangements and have been a popular choice for florists for many years
