Reading Goals: • In third grade, children continue to extend and refine their reading and writing to suit varying purposes and audiences. • Third-graders will learn to: • Read fluently and enjoy reading • Use a range of strategies when drawing meaning from the text • Use word identification strategies appropriately and automatically when encountering unknown words • Recognize and discuss elements of different text structures • Make critical connections between texts • Write expressively in many different forms (stories, poems, reports) • Use a rich variety of appropriate vocabulary and sentences • Revise and edit their own writing during and after composing • Spell words correctly in final writing drafts (Scientific Spelling)

What teachers do: • Provide opportunities daily for children to read, examine, and critically evaluate narrative and expository texts • Continue to create a climate that fosters critical reading and personal response • Teach children to examine ideas in texts • Encourage children to use writing as a tool for thinking and learning • Extend children's knowledge of the correct use of writing conventions • Emphasize the importance of correct spelling in finished written products • Create a climate that engages all children as a community of literacy learners

What parents and family members can do: • Continue to support children's learning and interest in different ways such as visiting the library, going to bookstores, reading online books • Find ways to highlight children's progress in reading and writing • Stay in regular contact with your child's teachers about activities and progress in reading and writing • Encourage children to use and enjoy print for many purposes (such as recipes, directions, games, and sports) • Build a love of language in all its forms and engage children in conversation

Interactive Notebooks • This semester we will be focusing on finding those missing puzzle pieces to help your child succeed! • This is notebook that will hold all your child’s notes and some assignments. • *This can stay in the classroom or go home • This holds everything we will be doing in class. It should help your child stay organized and have everything in one spot.

Accelerated Reading (AR) • Goals:  Will help students reach their maximum reading abilities and increase their Lexile level which determines what books they can read independently at school and at home.  Students are assigned a point goal according to their ZPD. • Color Dots:  AR levels are evaluated every month through monthly ISIP and students are promoted to different color dots.  We want our students to show growth in their reading and be successful.  Students love the success of earning a new color dot! • Students:should read at least 30 minutes per day • Reports:  Home Connect Letters

AR Incentives • In order for the students to be included in the activities for reaching their goal, they must have tested with at least 80% accuracy and meet their assigned point goal. • Students who reach their goals every quarter will receive rewards which include fun activities outside of the classroom and special recognition. • All students who meet all four quarters will earn a field trip at the end of the year. Any student who reads 1 million words or more will be recognized as a Royal Reader and will earn a very special reward!

  12. Math Goals A new skill is learned every day. We do guided practice and independent practice in class. The independent practice is exactly like their homework to reinforce the skill. Student’s use strategies for each skill that can be found in their journal/notebooks. Math skills are spiraled in the homework for continued practice on previously learned skills. Apply strategies taught to questions (ex. CUBES)

  15. Tests and Assessments 1. Math STAAR test in May (taken once).      -32 questions      -complete in 4 hours  2.  CFA's 3.  District Benchmarks 4.  Monthly ISIP through Istation 5. Other formal and informal assessments
