  2. Background • Radarsat-1 • Ideal EO system to monitor polar regions • Still operational (2008-2009) • Data continuity • Radarsat-2 (Canadian government data allocation - $450M) • Radarsat C (High revisiting frequency – 3 satellites) • CSA submitted a proposal to the Canadian IPY office to support the coordination, acquisition, processing and dissemination of Radarsat data during the IPY period • Large Radarsat-1 Archive collected over both polar regions (>250,000 images over the Arctic) • CSA initiated the processing of a significant portion of the Radarsat-1 Canadian Archive - ASAP project ($1.5M)

  3. ASAP Project • National consultation (Nov-06) • Three phases under which more than 7 500 Radarsat-1 archive data will be processed: Phase 1 (50%): Blanket coverage in Fine 1 of the Canadian polar region and the Arctic Archipelago (2000-2001) Phase 2 (25%): Seasonal polar snapshots between 2003 and now Phase 3 (25%): Processing of images under specific areas of interests identified and agreed upon as supersites by the research communities • Web Portal for images and products dissemination

  4. Phase 1

  5. Phase 2 Circumpolar ScanSAR Seasonal Coverage Fall 2003 Summer 2003

  6. Phase 2 Circumpolar ScanSAR Seasonal Coverage Spring 2004 Winter 2004

  7. Phase 3

  8. Next Steps … • National consultation (supersites) • Looking for the collaboration of other Agencies to complement the ASAP project • ASAP Portal: • Integration of two existing ScanSar mosaics of Canada (Winter and Summer mosaic) • Integration of the Canadian Ice Service Radarsat-1 Archive data ( > 30,000 images) • ASAP data & products will be accessible to IPY researchers • Participate in the ICSU-WMO IPY Space Task Group
