    1. 1 Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes Mitzi Smith EDFN:8773 October 23, 2001

    2. 2 A Warning from Robinson, Shaver, and Wrightsman “Our personality and attitude measurement series, originally published by the Institute for Social Research of the Univ. of Michigan more than 20 years ago, has reached a wide international audience. Colleagues around the world tell us that these volumes are among the most frequently borrowed and stolen publications in their libraries.

    3. 3 A Warning Continued… Buyers of this book should take heed: It has to be chained to its shelf! Evidently there is a worldwide hunger for measurement sourcebooks.”

    4. 4 Personality Measures: Definition According to Gall, Borg, and Gall, Personality Measures assess individual differences in aspects of personality such as traits, needs, psychological disorders, values, and attitudes. The subjects fill out a paper and pencil measurement tool.

    5. 5 Personality Inventories: Definition Assess a mixture of personality traits using a self-reporting instrument which is also usually done in paper and pencil format.

    6. 6 Limitations of personality inventories The inventories rely on the truthfulness of the individual completing it. Some inventories have a “lie scale” built in to detect this problem.

    7. 7 Limitations- continued Response set is created. A response set is the extent to which an individual’s response reflects a predisposition as opposed to a thoughtful response to each item.

    8. 8 Types of response sets

    9. 9 Invasion of privacy Personality inventories have sometimes been seen as an invasion of privacy. Be extremely careful when selecting items on an inventory that may cause a breakdown in relations between parents or community groups. Ex. Asking students sexual preferences, sexual experiences, etc.

    10. 10 Projective techniques Projective techniques use various forms of stimuli that might better reveal a person’s inner thoughts more than a structured test with limited responses.

    11. 11 Example of Projective Techniques The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) is a set of drawings of individuals in various interpersonal situations. The test subject creates a story to each situation.

    12. 12 Various types of measurement tools
