HOW IS SECONDARY SCHOOL DIFFERENT? • 2 Semesters per Year – • Sem 1: September to January • Sem 2: February to June • 4 courses per semester taught by different teachers • Summative Evaluations at the end of each semester • Course selection process • Full cafeteria service • Extensive extra-curricular activities • More independence

  4. What is a typical day like? • 8:30am – 3:00pm • 5 periods a day • 1 period is lunch – either period 3 or 4 • Each period is 75 minutes long

  5. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Total of 30 credits - 18 Compulsory Credits - 12 Optional Credits Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test – completed in grade 10 40 hours of Community Service – students can start the summer before grade 9

  6. English Math Science French Geography Healthy Active Living (boys can take Football Focus or Regular Phys Ed) GRADE 9 COURSES 6 Compulsory Courses

  7. GRADE 9 COURSES CHOOSE 1 OF: Dramatic Arts Music Visual Arts 2 Optional Courses • CHOOSE 1 OF: • Business Technology • Exploring Technologies • Hospitality & Tourism, Health Care, Computer Engineering & Design, Transportation, Construction, Manufacturing & Communication Tech

  8. TYPES OF COURSES IN GRADE 9 • Academic • Applied • Locally Developed (in Math, Science and English ) • Open 'Emphasis and pace'

  9. What do Students Need to Know to Select the Correct Courses? • What are my interests? • What do I do well? • What is my learning style? • What are my work habits? • What do my teachers and parents/guardians think my strengths are?

  10. Academic ('D') Courses • Emphasize theoretical, abstract applications of essential concepts plus additional related concepts • More self-directed • Greater opportunities for independent learning • Approx. 30 students per class

  11. Expectations and Habits of a Student at the Academic Level • Grade 8 at level 3 and higher • Fast paced delivery • Completes homework consistently • Works independently in a focused manner • Self-motivated and rises to challenges • Perseveres when challenged

  12. Applied ('P') Courses • Focus on practical applications of essential concepts and real-life examples, providing more opportunities for hands-on experiences • More teacher-directed • Approx. 22 students per class

  13. Expectations and Habits of a Student at the Applied Level • Grade 8 at level 1 or 2 • Enjoys concrete hands-on practical applications • May need assistance when applying new learning • May need help to organize and complete homework

  14. Locally ('L') Developed Courses Mathematics, Science and English • Focus on essential skills using practical activities • Designed for students who need more one on one support in Math, Science or English • Teacher-directed • Approx 17 students per class

  15. Expectations and Habits of a Student at the Locally Developed Level • More one on one attention with teacher • Applies new learning to tasks that have been modelled in class • May require consistent reminders to stay on task • Works betters in smaller class size

  16. MAKING CHOICES - CONSIDERATIONS A MIXED TIMETABLE IS POSSIBLE IN GRADE 9 (combination of 'D', 'P' & 'L' courses) SUCCESS IN GRADE 9 AND 10 IS VITAL TO THE SUCCESS OF A STUDENT IN HIGH SCHOOL!

CONSIDERATIONS Course types chosen in grade 9 DO NOT LIMIT course types for grade 10 Students will be able to move from Academic courses in grade 9 to Applied courses in grade 10 In all subjects except math students will be able to move from Applied courses in grade 9 to Academic courses in grade 10 depending on Grade 9 achievement There are ways to change course types throughout a student’s high school career

  18. OTHER PROGRAMS • Learning Strategies Course (GLE/GLS) is designed for IEP or recommended students to support their learning, they require counsellor approval • ESL courses support students who are continuing to develop their English language skills

  19. OTHER PROGRAMS – LINK CREW • year long transition program • gr. 11 & 12 Link Leaders guide gr. 9 students • orientation program at beginning of the year • social and academic events throughout the year

  20. COURSE SELECTION PROCESS • Grade 8 teachers will be providing course level recommendations on Option Sheet • Complete Option Sheet and return to homeroom teacher • Submit courses online from your myBlueprint account

  22. Step 1 - Login to myBlueprint Account www.myblueprint.ca/peel Login here using your email address and password

  23. Step 2 – Choose Your Courses • Click on Submit Courses to begin choosing your courses

  25. Adding Courses • Click on Subject • Change Grade to Grade 9 • Click on Subject folder • Click on Course to read description • Click ‘Add Course to Plan’ in bottom right corner

  26. Removing a Course • Hover your cursor over the course box (do not click) and a red ‘X’ will appear. Then click the ‘X’ to remove the course. • Add a new course

  27. Submitting Your Courses • Click ‘Submit” • Be sure to review your course selections as you will not be able to make changes in myBlueprint once submitted • Click ‘Confirm and Print’ • Keep a copy of Sign-Off sheet for your records

  28. You Are Done! • Submission Deadline: February 7th, 2014 • Return purple Grade 9 Option Sheet with parent/guardian signature to homeroom teacher by February 7th, 2014
