  28. Policy and Procedures As of 2007 Degree Revocation Procedures – 7.01-7.18 pg 27 7.08 If degree revocation is recommended [by the Review Committee] the graduate will participate in a hearing with the Academic Integrity Panel unless he/she admits responsibility for a serious violation and accepts the Review Committee’s recommendation. 7.11 AIP will determine A) if the graduate committed an act that was aserious violation of academic integrity and B) if degree revocation is an appropriate sanction. The Hearing Panel may recommenddegree revocation to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Oklahoma State University

  29. Hearing Prep Process • No two hearings are alike, but a typical packet will include: • Itinerary of the hearing • Summary of Incident/Allegation Statement • Form C (Resolution Meeting results) • Form B (Initial Student Notification) • Evidence from the instructor about the hearing • Form D (student) From E (instructor) Additional statements from either party or both parties, what the grade would be if overturned/decreased • Supporting information such as emails, a syllabus, graded work, etc… will be placed behind the statement of whoever provided it.

  30. Appeal Considerations • What are things used for consideration? • Syllabus - The University considers the syllabus a contract between a faculty member and each student within a course. • Supporting evidence – More Likely than not that a violation occurred. • Clarity of issue – Do the syllabus and the assignment clearly communicate what is allowed and required to the student.

  31. Appeal Considerations • What are things we don’t consider in an appeal? • Harassment allegations • Conduct issues • Discrimination allegations  • All issues of this type are directed to the appropriate administrator for consideration and review.

  32. Helpful Hints • Review the hearing packet before coming to the hearing • Feel free to write in your hearing packet. • Prehearing discussion is for clarification, not judgment. • Students can bring an adviser if it will make them feel more comfortable. • Panel members should recuse themselves if they know either party.

  33. Helpful Hints • Make sure when reviewing the hearing packet you are referring back to the policy to compare. • If the student requests legal counsel be present then OSU attorney will also be present. • Student s and Faculty can meet with the panel via phone if they are out of town. • The goal of the hearing is to get answers so that a decision can be made.

  34. Conducting an AIP Hearing During the Hearing • Structure of a hearing: • 15 Minute policy question time • Introductions – Panel/Parties • Read the violation statement • Student & Instructor - opening statement (if any) • Witnesses (if any) • Questions from the Panel to either party • Closing statements for Student & Instructor All interactions should be with the panel. Instructor and Student don’t need to speak to each other. Adviser/Friend should be ignored by panel; can only speak to the party they came to support. Oklahoma State University

  35. Conducting an AIP Hearing • Deliberation – Panel votes on 2 things • Did the violation occur? • Is the Sanction appropriate? • Make your voice heard. • You were nominated to represent the university. If you don’t like the way discussion is going be sure you let the other panel members know. • Conversely – give all panel members a chance to express their opinion even if you don’t agree. Oklahoma State University

  36. Conducting an AIP Hearing • Complete decision forms • Clearly communicate your reason for the decision. • Help the chair put together the decision letter to go to the student and instructor. • Make suggestions to the student or instructor if needed. Ex. – clarifying the expectations of academic integrity in the syllabus. • All panel members will sign the vote sheet. Oklahoma State University

  37. Confidentiality As a member of the AIP you must abide by the strictest confidentiality standards. You may not discuss the content or outcome of the case with anyone other than the Office of Academic Affairs. Any concerns should be addressed with them inperson. Information about alleged violations of academic integrity is confidential under the provisions of FERPA and should not be disclosed except as permitted by the Act or with written permission of the student. Oklahoma State University

  38. What to Wear? My advice is this: Don’t wear your pajamas and don’t wear a suit unless you are doing it for another reason. What you wear to class is fine. We want hearings to be casual yet professional. Keep the clothes casual and the attitude professional. Oklahoma State University
