  1. WHERE IS THE DIMSUM?“Asia-burbs” in Los AngelesJean Yang | Fall 2010

  2. WHERE IS THE DIMSUM? METHODOLOGY. Geocoded all dim sum restaurants on Yelp. Analyzed race in 2mile buffers around all locations • Clusters in San Gabriel Valley • 158,000 Chinese in SGV in 1990 • Strong correlation between dim sum locations and high percentage of Asians • Clustering of both in San Gabriel Valley SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census, Yelp, UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  3. “ASIAN”-NESS IN LA COUNTY METHODOLOGY. To understand the geographical phenomenon of Asian clusters, I looked at how the Asian race, population born in Asian and % who speak Asian languages clustered in LA % ASIAN %BORN IN ASIA % SPEAK ASIAN LANGUAGE WEIGHTING ASIAN HOTSPOT = ASIAN RACE x 1 SPEAK L ANGUAGE x 2 BORN IN ASIA x 3 SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  4. HOW ASIAN IS IT? METHODOLOGY. “Asian Tracts” were selected by rasterizing and classifying the features of “Asian Race”, “Born in Asia” and “Speaking Asian Language”. Asian Tracts were calculated by weighing each features as described in the previous slide. There were clear clusters around Rosmead, Covina and Rancho Palos Verde. For the purposes of this study, I selected the cluster of tracts around Rosmead and Monterey Park for analysis. “ASIAN-NESS” SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census, UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  5. HOW DIFFERENT ARE THESE CLUSTERS?ASIA BURBS ARE WELL EDUCATED % GRAD & PROFESSIONAL DEGREES IN MONTERYPARK ASIA-BURB % GRAD & PROFESSIONAL DEGREES AMONG ASIANS IN LA COUNTY 10.3% 9.2% % GRAD & PROFESSIONAL DEGREES LA COUNTY 7.8% SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  6. HOW DIFFERENT ARE THESE CLUSTERS?ASIA BURBS HAVE SIMILAR INCOME TO LA AVG PER CAPITA INCOME LOS ANGELES PER CAPITA INCOME IN MONTERY PARK ASIA-BURB MEDIAN PER CAPITA INCOME $19,661 MEDIAN PER CAPITA INCOME $20,683 SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  7. HOW DIFFERENT ARE THESE CLUSTERS?ASIA BURBS ARE ENTREPRENEURIAL % SELF EMPLOYED LOS ANGELES % SELF EMPLOYED IN MONTERY PARK ASIA-BURB AVG % SELF EMPLOYED 15% AVG % SELF EMPLOYED 10% AVG % SELF EMPLOYED 10% SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  8. MONTEREY PARK & ROSEMEAD • 78% of the people who work in Rosemead and Monterey Park live in the “Asiaburb” (PUMS data 1990) • LA average for living in the same Public Use Microdata Area is 23% • “AsiaBurb” is an integrated work and living space • Rosemead and Monterey Park are the key points SOURCE. Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  9. ENTREPRENEURS IN ROSEMEAD METHODOLOGY. Distance from each tracts to one of the hubs was calculated by converting the tract into a point and then measuring the distance to the centroid of Rosemead of Monterey Park Strong correlation between entrepreneurship and tracts near Rosemead Should further study the dynamic between Rosemead and Monterey Park SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  10. GOTTA SPEAK THE LANGUAGE METHODOLOGY. Distance from each tracts to one of the hubs was calculated by converting the tract into a point and then measuring the distance to the centroid of Rosemead of Monterey Park Strong external connection to Asia Average of 42% speak Asian Language Heaviest language use is slightly outside THE hub of Rosemead and Monterey Park SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare Designed by Jean Yang

  11. CONCLUSIONS • Asianburbs replicate some features of old networks • Places where Asians can speak their mother tongues • Conduct business through their own networks • Keep close ties to countries of origin • Places where they can feel at home • Not springboards to assimilation but communities …and that mean a lot of dimsum places SOURCE. 2000 US Decennial Census,UCLA Mapshare, Yelp Designed by Jean Yang
