Examination Production Selection of Committee Members
Committee • Each teaching centre in Canada supplies 2 examiners • Rural examiners are also selected based on recommendation from committee members • Special effort is made to include Emergency subgroups: Pediatrics, Toxicology, Trauma, Intensive Care etc • The term is 5 years. This can be extended .
Committee • Members chosen based on their personality, relationship with the specialty, and expertise • Current members hold a discussion at the end of exam “week” to fill slots of those retiring. • Offers are made to potential new members • Examiners on not paid for this service, nor do most get time from their jobs • It is a volunteer position
Question Generation -Starts in the early Fall for the Spring exam -Each committee member is asked by the Chief Examiner to write 3 or 4 questions with an answer key -all audiovisual materials must be included in e-format -These are sent to the Chief examiner -He/She reviews them. -in the the winter a sub group of 8 members (Blue Print committee) convene -The questions are rephrased, tossed out, or changed into acceptable format
Final oral question production • Committee members meet to do a final review of the questions they will ask • Takes place while written exam is conducted • All committee members take the product reviewed by Blue print commitee and re-hash • Resources are used to ensure that the final question is sound
Properties of a perfect Question: -relevant -tests for the “competent physician” -can be handled in the given amount of time -tests for the “cautious physician” -is discriminatory An A+ Question
