What is Non Fiction? • Nonfiction writing is a representation of facts • It can be writing, pictures or movies • It encompasses all about books, scientific writing, biographies, reports, how to books, expository writing and so much more • Encourages children to write from own expertise • Children write non fiction across the curriculum

Why non fiction in the Primary grades? • Provides the key to success in later schooling • Prepares students to handle real-life reading • Appeals to readers’ preferences • Addresses students’ questions and interests • Builds knowledge of the natural and social world • Boosts vocabulary and other kinds of literacy knowledge

  5. Where do We Start? • Topic- What do we know? • Develop reading and writing vocabulary • Teach visual literacy (familiarize) • Gather resources for support • Mode, model, model • Write, write, write • Revise, edit and publish
