  2. Instructions for Adding Silca GrateTM to a New Deck Construction

  3. Preparation • Establish finished floor elevation. • Determine thickness of deck material choice and add 1½”for Silca GrateTM thickness.

  4. Preparation • Establish finished floor elevation. - Allow for existing constraints such as doorway thresholds.

  5. Preparation • Make plan of layout and pattern of deck materials (ie. Natural stone, paver stone, brick or tile).

  6. Choose From 3 Border Types • Natural stone, pavers, tile, etc. • Wrap rim joist with aluminum or vinyl Brick End of Joist (Front) View Fascia board

  7. Deck Construction • Make plan of layout and pattern of deck materials (ie. natural stone, paver stone, brick or tile). • Build your treated lumber structure to the predetermined elevation (height). • Assemble deck using 6’ on center footing (or to local building codes) with joists spaced 16’ on center. 2x8 are acceptable 2x10 are better.

  8. Silca GrateTM Orientation • Before placing Silca GrateTM on deck joists be sure reinforcement straps face down. NO YES

  9. Silca GrateTM Placement • Place Silca GrateTM on deck joists. Staggering grate joints improves overall strength of installation.

  10. Silca GrateTM Attachment • Attach Silca GrateTM to joists using 6 deck screws.

  11. Complete Silca GrateTM Installation • Install Silca GrateTM over desired area.

  12. Install Geotextile/Landscape Blanket • Install geotextile/landscape blanket over Silca GratesTM if polymeric sand is to be used in construction.

  13. Test Install for Fit • Now is the best time to test install your choice of decking to check for pattern and material fit and trim.

  14. Complete Installation of Decking Material

  15. Fill All Joints of Decking Material with Polymeric Sand* *See next page for polymeric sand application tips.

  16. Polymeric Sand Application Tips • Check weather forecast to allow for 12 hours of curing time without precipitation. • Pour Polymeric sand into all joints from bag. • Use broom to ensure all joints are filled with sand. • Excess sand on the surface of the decking materialcan be removed using a wet/dry vacuum or leaf blowerLIGHTLY. Be sure all joints remain filled with sand. • Lightly mist polymeric sand and entire deck materialsurface using a garden hose or mister. Be sure all joints are saturated. • Repeat misting 3 times.
