  2. Protecting Your Personal Information • Avoid putting your full name • Don’t give out your social security number • Keep your address and phone number to yourself

  3. Safety for Youth • Avoid putting a photo of yourself online • Flirting with strangers online is a high risk • Be wary of acquaintances wanting to “meet in person” • Don’t post information or pictures unless you’re comfortable with the whole world viewing it

  4. Scammers and Phishers • A scammer impersonates a legitimate business in order to sell you something • A phisher also impersonates a business or organization in order to trick you into giving them your personal information • Phishers use spam and pop-up messages to lure people in

  5. Spyware • Spyware software controls and monitors your computer use • Spyware may redirect you to certain websites and/or record your keystrokes • Signs that spyware is on your computer • A great income of pop-up messages • A browser that takes you to a site other than the one you typed in • Slow reaction while opening a program or saving a file • Keys that don’t work

  6. Guarding Your Computer • Anti-spyware • Protect your computer from viruses that may damage your computer with anti-virus software • Keep hackers out of your computer by using a firewall

  7. Proper Precautions • Be sure to make a back up of any important files onto a disc • Update any protective software(like anti-virus) on a regular basis, or use software that updates itself • Protect your password and try to create one that includes 8 digits, numbers, symbols and avoid using common words, personal references, adjacent keys on the keyboard, and your login name • Be wary of who you trust, and double check with whom you’re dealing with before giving them any information
