  7. Calculate the Slope

  8. Your Turn • Sarah rented a van to take the CR disk golf team to Crescent City for a match. The vehicle had a full tank and 13,741 miles on the odometer when she picked it up on March 1. On March 4, she returned the van with 14,014 miles on the odometer and used 13 gallons of fuel. Sarah paid $118 total for the rental. • What was the vans rate of gas consumption in miles per gallon? • What was the average cost of the rental in dollars per day? • What was the rate of travel in miles per day? • What was the rental rate in cents per mile?

  9. Finding Intercepts • x-intercept: The x-intercept is where the graph crosses the x-axis. The y value is 0 at the x-intercept. • y-intercept: The y-intercept is where the graph crosses the y-axis. The y value is 0 at the y-intercept.

  10. y (0, 3) y-intercept x-intercept (6, 0) x Example

  11. Using Intercepts to Graph • To find the y-intercept, replace x with 0 and solve for y. • To find the x-intercept, replace y with 0 and solve for x. • Example: Find the intercepts of the graph of

  12. Graph 5x – 2y = 10 using intercepts

  13. Your Turn: Graph 0x + y = 2 using intercepts.

  14. Graph x + 0y = –2 using intercepts
