  1. Osteoblasts bone formation assay t.arnett@ucl.ac.uk

  2. ‘Trabecular’ bone nodules formed by rat primary osteoblasts cultured 14 days 5 mm Unstained preparations

  3. 2 mm Dystrophic mineralisation of osteoblast cell layers in presence of 10 mM -glycerophosphate  cell death + inhibition of normal bone matrix formation

  4. 5 mm Discrete mineralisation of ‘trabecular’ bone matrix formed by rat osteoblasts cultured with 2 mM -glycerophosphate Alizarin red stain for calcium

  5. 5 mm Alkaline phosphatase staining and matrix mineralisation in primary rat osteoblast cultures

  6. 9 days - 2% O2 9 days - 20% O2 Hypoxia inhibits osteoblast proliferation and bone formation

  7. Acidosis blocks mineralisation of bone matrix nodules formed by rat osteoblasts pH 7.4 Alizarin red stain for calcium pH 6.9
