  1. BELLWORK • Define the following vocabulary words: • Textile • Turnpike • Tariff • THINKER: As factories began to grow, women and immigrants became the most common workers because they were paid less. This allowed the company to receive greater profits and keep up with competition. Do you think this trend is still true in society today? Explain!

  2. Economic growth • As the population was increasing and moving west, more people left the farms and moved to the cities. • This also caused an increase in factories. • Due to population and industry growth, transportation needed to improve. • Roads, turnpikes, canals, and train tracks all increased to make transportation easier. • Not only could Americans travel all throughout the U.S., but it also made importing and exporting goods easier.

  3. TIMELINE PROJECT • In order to understand all of the new inventions and improvements of the early 1800’s, you are going to create a timeline that highlights the important developments. • There are ten events on the board. For your timeline you must: • Find the date, and place them in chronological order • Describe the event and its importance to the economy • Draw a picture that describes the event • HINT: the easiest way to do this is to read the section FIRST! • Pages 141-147

  4. CLOSURE • On the back of your timeline, write a one paragraph summary of how the economy was changing in the early 1800’s. • Include improvements in factories, transportations, and machines.
