  1. Life cycle management: roles of standards Dr Norman Swindells CEng, FIMMM Ferroday Limited DEPUIS Workshop, ENEA, 2008-04-14

  2. Integrated Product Policy (IPP) • European Commission policy to support the Revised Lisbon Agenda • Outlines a strategy for reducing the environmental impact caused by products • Consideration should be given to all aspects of the product life-cycle: from cradle to grave • Causes considerable intellectual challenge for design with dependence on good quality information

  3. Whole product life cycle

  4. Whole life cycle approach • Information management is every company’s second business • Whole life cycle approach to product and processes should also extend to information derived from data • Life time of product data is longer than the life time of computer software

  5. Product properties LCA Design Re-use Disposal plan Disposal records Disposal methods Requirements for data for IPP

  6. Computerised environmental information • Computerised environmental information has special problems: • Lifetime of information is longer than the lifetime of any software or system • Multi-system communication is needed in the present time • Unknown users in unknown places need the data to use with unknown systems at unknown times in the future

  7. Sustainable data • Requirements for information: • Data for design, life-cycle assessment and disposal methods that can be integrated with engineering design systems to support the supply chain • Data to accompany a product to its end-of-life phase to manage the disposal strategy with information on design, assembly, maintenance, materials

  8. Auto OEM Final user depolute dismantle National admin shred Local admin landfill End of Life Vehicle information flow

  9. Life cycle assessement • The investigation and valuation of the environmental impacts of a given product (ISO 14040, 14044 standards) • Goal and scope • Identify system boundaries • Life cycle inventory (LCI) • modelling of the product system, data collection, as well as description and verification of data • Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) • impact potentials are calculated based on the LCI results • Interpretation of results

  10. ISO Standards for LCA • ISO 14040 Principles and framework • Overview of the practice, principles and limitations of life cycle assessment • ISO 14044 Requirements and guidelines • Guidance on the impact assessment phase, interpretation of results, nature and quality of data • ISO 14048 Data documentation format • For written records, not computer records

  11. SC4 standards for sustainable data • ISO 10303 • Product data representation for all stages of the life cycle • ISO 13584 • Dictionaries of products processes and properties to support applications of ISO 10303 • ISO 15926 • Reference data of terms and definitions • ISO 8000 • The quality control and quality assurance of data

  12. ISO 10303 Standards for IPP • ISO 10303-203 • Design and assembly of mechanical products • ISO 10303-210 • Design and assembly of electronic circuits • ISO 10303-214 • Design and assembly of automobiles • ISO 10303-235 • Engineering properties for product design • ISO 10303-239 • Product life cycle support

  13. Eco-innovation Depends on Correct use of LCA data Depends on Correct use of Product data technology Provide support for Provide support for ISO TC 207 develops ISO 14000 series standards for the environmental data management ISO TC 184 develops standards for the interoperability of data warehouse, design data, process data, etc. Role of DEPUIS

  14. Conclusions • DEPUIS is showing how the two groups of standards are interrelated • LCA depends on the availability of information from a variety of sources • SC4 standards provide the means to manage the supply of that data and to provide longevity, stability and quality assurance
