If a word ends in a consonant other than N or S, the last syllable is the loudest.

An accent mark tells you that one of the two rules: ends in vowel, n or s or ends in any other consonant HAS BEEN BROKEN. • When you pronounce a word differently than the rules say, you write in the accent for a reader.
How do I divide words into syllables to find the loudest syllable? • The only letters that can start a syllable are letters that can start a word in Spanish normally. • importante im por tan te • There are no words that begin with mp or rt or nt. Split these consonant groups.
a, e, and o are strong vowels and they can stand by themselves. • leal has to be split le and al. • You cannot have two strong vowels side by side in the same syllable.
That leaves i and u as weak vowels that don’t stand alone well. They often blend with a strong vowel, another weak vowel or have an accent in an emphsized syllable.
